Indeed. But the wide association of this type of font with 'hi-tech'
made it de rigeur for cheezy seventies SF shows.
Space 1999 used 'Data 70' (the MICR font) and 'Countdown'.
I use both in the P3 manual.

They still use them in my bank at least - they run cheques through the
same machine they swipe your card with.
