Tip: variable spaces (using playlists)

2005-05-10 by Paul Nagle

Here's one you might like:

Create two patterns - one of them a simple 4-step sequence playing any
4 notes you like. For the second pattern, don't enter any notes;
instead set two auxilliaries as follows:

Row A "offset Aux D rel" and enable the first step with any value you
like.
Row D "set lstep abs" - enable step 1, with a value of 1; this will
set the last step of the pattern - and thus control its length. Ensure
the pattern has no active gate events.

Now make sure that RoPS is set to OFF for both of these patterns (it's
after the Accumulator Config in the same menu). Create a two-step
playlist to play them and sync to "Pattern" rather than the Global
Bar. Now play.

The result is a 4-step pattern followed initially by a space. The
length of this space depends on the tbase and the Row A offset of your
silent pattern. As it loops round, the space grows according to the
offset criteria (according to any limits you set for Aux D).

Experiment with different offsets and rules for Aux D limits. You
could set Row A to simply randomise (sorry, 'randomize') the absolute
length but if you do this it can be quite wild. Tame it by setting the
Chg parameter to "B" (sync to the Global Bar).

It's quite fun I think and can be used to add variable spaces to
patterns that don't have notes but, instead, send MIDI controllers,
auxes to other tracks etc.

I know, it's sunny and I should be outside getting some fresh air.. 8)
