new akai sampler making whining noise from unit

2008-06-24 by hifistereo2001

I just recieved my new Akai S1000 in the mail today. And the first
thing that I noticed is that the unit itself is making this whining
noise, and after I skip the waiting for harddisk part, it makes
another higher pitched whine.

Is this the whine of death that I have heard about? Because the audio
outputs don't have this whining noise at all from what I can see.

Hmm … Maybe it’s the display that’s whining. Have you considered this ?

Have fun with your S1000 !!

That just might be it, as the audio outputs are just fine. The other
thing is that my volume pot is making lots of noise when I turn it.

Its definitely needs work. But the good news is that it I got it for
140 dollars with 18 megs of ram. If anything I can at least take the
ram from the unit if it eventually dies.

It was advertised has having a new backlight installed, but it doesn't
look like it as the display is a bit dim.

I would definitely look into the LCD before anything else.

An easy way is to open it up and disconnect the backlight cable inside. Or even to disconnect the LCD.

Turn it on to see if the whining is still there. If it’s not … well … you know what to replace J

Hmm .. I can’t remember what it looks like, but it’ll probably have two or three connectors if I remember correctly.

It is attached to the LCD inside your S1000.

I have a S1000KB and am not sure if it is located in the same place – I’ll go have a look and see if I can take a picture of it.

The whining noise is the inverter (electronic component/part) of the display.
Don´t care on this, your audio isn´t affected by this behaviour.
Whining display inverters are quite common for technology of this age,- one of my AKAI samplers is whining since I got it new,- you know... :-)
If you buy used and possibly vintage gear of the past, don´t expect noiseless operation comparable to software ...

have fun w/ your S1000 and be happy it works including all it´s functionality it was made for.

Otherwise, try to find the inverter for the display in a better condition...,- good luck !

If you want to get rid of a 2meg memory card in working condition, - let me know ...

Honestly I can’t think of any other stuff than the LCD and the Power Supply that can generate a whine over time.

It seems like that where's its coming from. Is there any way that you could replace this part or is it one of those rare things to find?

Honestly I can’t think of any other stuff than the LCD and the Power Supply that can generate a whine over time.

So what does this mean? It seems to be working fine other than that
bloody whining noise. What usually happens over time?

Whew!!! Thats makes me feel alot better.

The thing with the 2 meg card is, it has a cap attached to it, and im not sure if removing that card might not make the other cards work.

I could take a picture of what im talking about. Otherwise id love to sell you a 2 meg card.

Otherwise, try to find the inverter for the display in a better condition... ,- good luck !

If you want to get rid of a 2meg memory card in working condition, - let me know ...

Hi Tom !

I own 1 S-1000, 1 S-1000PB and 2 S-1100 ... my 1st S-1000 is as old as S1000s exist and it works flawlessly since that time.

I recognized, if 2meg cards only are installed in a S-1xxx series sampler, this cap is connected to the chassis and definitely, Ive never found out why !

Actually, my S-1000 is equipped w/ 4 8meg cards and has none of these caps installed,- no prob!
One of my S-1100 is also eqipped w/ 4 8meg cards, no cap, no prob ...
My S-1000PB is equipped w/ 4 2meg cards and I kept the cap installed in this sampler ...

If you have the occasion to swap cards from different models to the other ones, youll find out, the cap is related to the original 2meg cards. In this case, the very 1st card in the 1st slot only needs (?) this cap.

I also found out: If the machine would/is be(en) equipped w/ a combo of cards,- 2meg in the 1st slot and maybe 8meg cards in the following slots or 2 2meg cards in the 1st and 2nd slot and 2 8meg cards in the 3rd and 4th slot,- the cap, existing or not, makes no difference.

There are also 3rd party 2meg memory cards in the market which dont have the cap as also not the connectors hole in the PCB and all my 8 meg cards dont have these at all.

So,- also w/ this part in a S1xxx series sampler, simply put: Dont care too much on it.

All my S-1xxx samplers run fine w/ any combinations of cards as long as they are being jumpered (simple w/ S-1100, but more soldering work w/ a S-1000) correctly and w/ the cards in right order/place.

At least: One of my S-1100 is damaged, but I try it to bring it back to life again. It has 3 2meg cards inside actually and I want to extend its memory from 6 to 8megs. Thats why Im looking for a 2meg card.

Oh,- and I forgot to mention:
If you probably remove the 2 meg card from the 1st slot,- a) you have to swap the 2 8meg cards being in slot #2 and #3 to slots #1 and #2, but you dont have to re-jumper anything !!!
If your display shows 9 megawords actually and successfully @ power up (= 18MB), the machine is already jumpered for use w/ 8meg cards in all the slots !

hope that helps

What ???
Which fan ?
There are no fans in my S-1000, S-1000PB and 2 S-1100 ...

It´s the inverter of the display, period...

I've been reading through this thread, and wondering - I bought a
used S1000 about 2 years ago and have experienced a whine also, and
it definitely seems to be coming from the fan. Could this be it, or
have I been deceived? It really sounds like a fan issue to me.

Excuse me, but there is an exhaust fan in my S1000HD - I can see the
opening for it from the back, and I've opened the unit and have a
clear view of it. If you want me to send you a picture, I will.

The whine may be from the inverter, but there's a fan in the unit,
regardless. I will check more closely where the whine is coming from,
now that I have the cover off.

Hi Wayne !

O.k., - you have a HD- version.
The regular/earlier S1xxx samplers have no fan, but whine also sometimes.
In all the cases me and friends had, it was the inverter.
The inverter is hard to find, so,- sometimes it´s an option to let it like it is because ti doesn´t affect the audio.
I have all the units in large racks together w/ other gear and these are located in some distance,- I don´t care too much on the whine.
In addition: Fans are definitely louder than any whine of the display.
