Questions, questions...

2006-02-19 by Gilles Coudert

Hi! I'm new to this group. In fact, I'm new to Yahoo
Groups full stop.

I have just acquired a second-hand S1000 (10Mb RAM +
SCSI) on e-Bay. Having previously owned an S2000 and
still owning an S2800i (upgraded to 32Mb + external
HD), I am quite familiar with Akai samplers. However,
I still have a few questions, which I hope some of you
will be able to answer. Maybe I should have posted
them as separate message?

1. Is it still possible to get hold of cursor/data
knobs (the external plastic knob, that is)?

2. I downloaded OS 4.40 from the Archive section of
Akai's support pages. I followed all the instructions,
but the sampler tells me that it doesnt recognise the
disc format. Even the Disk --> Load --> OS routine
doesnt work. The sampler says there is no OS on the
disc. I tried an Akai-formatted disc and a
DOS-formatted disc just in case, but nothing worked.
Both discs were high density discs.

3. Is it necessary to remove the SCSI board to fit an
internal hard drive? If so, is it still possible to
get hold of blanking plates to close the hole left on
the rear panel?

4. Where exactly does the internal disc go?
What are the maximum (physical) dimensions possible
for a HD?

5. Does the SCSI HD have to have a 68-pin connector?

6. Is it possible to normalise samples after
recording?

7. When transferring samples from my S2800i over SCSI
('standard' setting), the samples are renamed MIDI 1,
MIDI 2, etc. Is there a way to retain the samples
original names?

8. Is it possible to assign samples to keys below C0
on the S1000? I use an 88-note master keyboard.

Regards,

Gilles
Kensworth, Beds. UK

Gilles,

Just some answers - I hope that other members can help you with the rest:

- knob: you can easily find other knobs in a more specialised
electronics shop - its just difficult to find one with the same
diameter & height. You can even buy it online because it uses an
industry standard. You can also use one of an old stereo set. I have
an old dual amplifier/receiver & it fits - or just make a wooden one &
paint it.

- floppy: it seems that your floppy drive has problems. You'll find
several messages in this newsgroup about this. Another option is to
change the rom, that saves on time when you start your sampler. I just
added a link (commercial section) to a small US based company that
provides these roms (route66 studios). I dont have any experience with
these guys but they are not expensive. If you know someone with an
eprom burner: the rom images are now in the files section.

- scsi: its an old discussion: please try to find the messages. I
know that the S1100 has an extra power supply connector for an
internal HD - but I'm not sure about the S1000. Secondly, check your
scsi card - not all cards have an internal scsi slot. That means that
you better leave your scsi card where it is because you'll need it.

There are no brackets for an internal HD if you dont have the special
HD version. You can drill 2 or 4 holes in the top lid of the case,
depending on the orientation of the HD.

Please dont stop sending questions. If you made some progress, you can
always send some pictures, experiences etc...

Thanks for providing the akai S1100 manual - I'll put it online as
soon as I can scan it in.

Rgds,
Frank

Re: Questions, questions...

2006-02-19 by Gilles Coudert

Thanks for the answers:

- knob: my S1000 has actually got knobs but the paint on one of them
is quite worn and I would like to restore it to its former glory. It
once belonged to Bros, allegedly!

- floppy: not sure that it's the drive. I can load and save
samples/progs without any problems. I wonder if it's the Akai
application that has a problem.

What's an EPROM burner btw? I found two binary Eprom images on this
group, how do I use them?

- scsi: true, there is no internal SCSI slot on the card. I've
checked. I might go for an external SCSI drive instead. The come up
very frequently on eBay; I've got one for my S2800i and one for my
Esi-4000.

Incidentally, if anyone has an S2800, I recommend the 32Mb upgrade
(sold by some company in Germany; e-mail me for details). As you may
know, the S2800i cannot be expanded beyond 16Mb normally. The only
thing is, it now plays up when naming items using the front panel
buttons, which isn't much of a problem because the data knob does
the trick. I must have fried something when soldering.

i'm having the same problem with not being able to upgrade the OS;
the OSMAKER program just opens and closes (or dosn't it work through
windows?) and the other os upgrade program just plays with the disk
for ages but dosn't write anything (or at least it won't read anything
on the s1000) it's so frustrating not being able to upgrade! i'd be
greatful if anyone could help.

i lost my cursor knob... i'm using a paper clip at the moment haha.

Frank G. and Robert F. helped me solve the problem: it
doesn't work on XP machines. I tried it on my old
Win98 PC and it worked! If you don't have access to
one, e-mail me your address and I'll send you an OS
floppy, free of charge of course.

Yes, the S3000 series samplers will all load S1000 progs and samples via
floppy or SCSI (I own a 2800i from the S3000 series and an S1000). They will
sound the same, although I find that the S1000 has a little more body and a
little less top end than the S2800i, but that could be my ears!

If you do keep your S1000 and feed S3000 floppies into it, make sure
you do all your editing/saving on the S3000:

although my S1000 reads S3000 discs (under OS 4.40), I can't save
anything in S1000 format on S3000-formatted floppies ("can't write to
S3000 directory", it says).

In fact, it won't even let me reformat the floppies (same error
message), even after wiping them in a PC!

hi,thanks for that,as look would have it thats what I intend doing, infact I have bought two s3000xls off ebay,70quid each, plus twenty postage.one for my small system, for the basic guts of a music idea, then tarted up on my big setup, where the other s3000xl will be .I also have an s1100,with an s1100ex to go with it,although I am still waiting for that to come, the eight meg card that the s1000 wouldnt read, without cutting tracks and stuff(too much for me...dont want to bugger it up) should go in the s1100,its already got two 8 meg cards in!The s1000 reads the 8 meg card as only two, which is staying put at the moment, until all mi other bits turn up anyway.
had a wobbly on ebay,as the guy who I bought the two s3000xls off didnt reply to any of my emails for 4 days....oh dear,I thought, turns out his system was down and has only just read them,he latter then sent another email as currier wanted a telephone number, which rings true,so things should be okay now.when these babies first came out my s1000 was well over a bloody grand!hope I live long enough to get what I want out of my new system, still been built.Anyway its great fun, keeps me off drugs,(not that I ever took any!) and stops me hitting old ladies ;-)
