Hi, im Martí, from Spain.

Im new to the music world, but been in electronics since i was a kid. This is like the best of both worlds for me: mod things and making noises, wonderfull.

The thing that brought me here was that im about to buy an Akai S1000 (obviously) but it has no RAM expansion, only 2mb. For the price im going to pay (50€) it seems ok to me.

My goal is to make some resampling truth it and, when bored, Im thinking about trying to make a RAM module for it.

So so so, a few questions:

Im been reading about the limitations of having only that amount of memory, but people sometimes is a little bit whiner and elitist, so i want to ask here, can i make something usefull with that amount of memory? Something useful for me is Kick+HiHats+percussion+Snare+some vocals, or something like that. I know that i cant seq with it, im talking just about the sound hoarding capatibilities.

Another one: do you think it is worth it? I think yes, but i can be fooled with that seemingly low price, so again i ask the pros.

Now the technical question: what about RAM clones? I have seen the M32S1 but im not willing to pay that kind of money, im happier doing it the hard way

I was just thinking with 2mb, you could get quite a bit of waveform synthesizer tones in there. You just need a little snippet, and then set the loop points so it's seamless, and there ya go!

Hi Marti,

Yes, of course, you can do a lot with 2mb, using the shorter waveforms as you can. 2mb is more than one floppy :)

Then you can use the S1000 as a synth, and combine 4 differents waves to make a new sound. I had fun to use it that way until my floppy was full, using only the basic waves provided with the os, and i had quite a lot of different programs.

To save memory you can :
- sample highest note or pitch, to shortened the lenght, then pitch down it with the Akai.
- use single cycle waveforms
- resample with lowest frequency (22khz to 8khz !)

For the price, yes, you could try.
Just check that the floppy drive is ok.
Have fun.

Cheers,
Olivier.
