S1000HD FanNoise

S1000HD FanNoise

2018-01-13 by nils.stockman@...

Hi all,

got my sticky fingers on a S1000HD recently. It works great, only problem is the noise from the fan on the rear. Its really loud and basically renders the machine useless in a studio environment. I guess I could build a shed for the S1000HD, but a easier solution would maybe be to remove the fan altogether?

My question is; is the fan there to cool the hard drive specifically, and would removing the drive make it possible to remove the fan also without the S1000HD overheating?

Also, anyone have experience replacing the fan with a newer, quieter model?

I don't have first hand experience with this particular model but I
don't see any reason not to replace the old fan with a new one.

I've done so on many occasions (samplers, old tektronix scopes, vintage
computers etc). Unscrew the fan and see its electrical properties and
then measure its size.

Volts are what really matters. Current draw of the replacement will most
probably be lower with the same or higher rpm.

Choose a model with as little current draw as possible with the same rpm
of the original. Even lower rpm should' t affect the air flow too much
to cause an issue. Even with the same rpm rating you can safely expect
the new fan to be almost quiet.

You should be able to find a direct replacement even if the dimensions
are not "standard".There are lots of models to choose from if you choose
a reputable brand.

I'd recommend noctua or papst fans. There are other brands as well
though but these are well known for their quality..

If you're in Europe I'd search tme.eu. Ebay is also an option.

Good luck.

Thanks for the info.
Yup, will definitely try a modern fan. Afraid the harddrive make a little noise on its own, so will have to look into replacing that as well at some point.
