S1100 effects and O.S.

S1100 effects and O.S.

2004-10-13 by tbiggz

Hi,

Do the effects come standard on the
S1100?

It seems the standard S1100 had many
standard features: The only option I
know of was the digital I/O board.
Were there others?

Also, how does the S1100 O.S. compare
to the S1000 O.S?

I mean, there's Version 4.40 for S1000,
does that also work on the S1100?

I thought the S1100 requires 2.0 ROM upgrade
for some features like HD recording.
I'm really confused. Is there someone who
knows the details here?

Thanks!

Hi,

Yes, the effects are standard on an S1100. The final S1100 O.S. is
4.30. I don't know if the S1000 OS would work but I wouldn't think it
necessary at all.

The S1100 also came standard with different A/D D/A converters than
the S1000, an SCSI board, and 8 output board with effects send/return
loop possibility..although this function doesn't work if using the
digital output.

I've also read about the HD recording after version 2.0 which Akai
did charge for when it was first released. The final O.S is 4.30 and
can be loaded via floppy or zip if you don't have the eproms of the
final version. Version up kits are still out there too. I have a zip
and cd-rom connected via SCSI, but no HD. So I can't comment about
that part. Hope this has helped a bit.

Wow thanks for the info!

Last thing: I wonder is if the S1100 can
be booted from the SCSI HD. I know some
Akai machines do not allow the OS to
boot from SCSI (even my ASR10 does that!).

Do you load your S1100 OS from the SCSI
HD?

Thanks again...

Hi again,

Actually yes it can! My machine currently automatically loads the
final OS from the SCSI zip disk. As long as you put the OS on the
first partition of the drive it should load automatically on powerup.

This is just temporary until I get enough time & energy to take it
out of the rack and put in the 2 eproms of the last OS which I
have. :)

Thanks for the advice on the OS storage
to HD. My S1100 arrived with an internal
HD and OS4.30 on a floppy disk. Amazingly,
noone ever loaded the OS on the internal
HD. Anyway, doing it was as easy as you
said and now I boot to OS4.30 really fast.

Great news!

1. Regarding your problem to mount the zip drive: Can't you change the
scsi ID of your scsi zip disc with dip switches or a dumb wheel?
Anyway, you can also change the scsi id of your HD by setting the
jumpers. Changing the scsi id of the zip drive looks to be easier.
Anyway, the sampler can work with only one external scsi id at a time,
so you have to switch between HD and zip all the time.

2. BTW: do you have the brand and exact model number of hard disk? I'm
thinking that the sampler takes a very limited number of HD models
when it is used internally. That may be one of the reasons why the
rest of us have problems mounting an internal HD.

Have fun!
Frank

Re: S1100 effects and O.S.

2004-10-26 by tbiggz

Hi,

The SCSI Zip has a switch to select SCSI #5 or #6. Since both IDs
are taken (By the S1100 and it's internal HD), there is no left over
option. I'll have to see if the SCSI zip can use other IDs also.

I didn't know only one external SCSI ID was allowed. That seems a
strange restriction; The EIII from 1988 has an internal HD and takes
an external zip just fine. But anyway, I've got enough reason to
give the zip drive a rest.

as for the internal hd, since it came with the machine already, I
have no idea what type it is. When I have time to open it up, I'll
check... Can I check the make/model without disturbing the drive?

Thanks.

Re: S1100 effects and O.S.

2004-10-26 by aneurysmhook

Hi,

Glad that worked well for you. I have the same type scsi zip drive
where the ID can only be set to 5 or 6. The S1100 will default it's
SCSI setting to being #6 and the target drive #5 every powerup. That
being said the OS would not load from the HD immediately if you are
able to change the internal HD's ID, but it works just the same from
a zip.

I'm not sure what is meant by only 1 external SCSI ID being allowed.
You can daisy chain several devices like a Zip drive then a CD-rom
drive, or a chain of several HDs, etc. As long as each device can
have it's own ID (I think you're out of luck on the zip drive) All
you need to do is tell the Akai which ID# is the current target
drive. Of course you can't access more than 1 drive concurrently, but
that's the way any scsi daisy chain works. I hope I didn't
misunderstand what you meant.

As far as the internal HD. I hope it goes without saying that if you
do open your machine use the PARK function to park the HD read heads
to avoid any damage while even moving the Akai.

Re: S1100 effects and O.S.

2004-10-26 by formals777

Hi,

Just to make it clear: I was just saying what we all know: the S1100
recognizes only one external scsi device at a time. That means that if
you have a zip drive and a HD, at the same time, that you must switch
between their scsi id's in the s1100's menu all the time.
It has nothing to do with the fact that scsi works with a daisy chain,
but just because the operating system doesnt keep a list with
available media in its memory. My mpc2000XL for example doesnt have
that problem: whenever you want to save or load a file, you select a
scsi channel, or just a device when it was already used before. In the
s1100 on the contrary, you need to change the settings all the time.

I hope we can close that discussion - there is already too much told
here about scsi.

Rgds,

Frank

Re: S1100 effects and O.S.

2004-10-27 by tbiggz

hi,

Sorry for the confusion. Mostly I'm just worried
about changing the SCSI ID of the internal drive
(to #4 let's say) so that the ZIP is seen (at #5).

I've heard of bad things happening (data loss)
after changing IDs with other machines. But
according to your posts, there's no risk on the
S1100. If that's true, I'll likely try it.

I appreciate the help guys; I think I understand
the issue around singular SCSI devices being seen:
It's initially just tedious, and not impossible
to have other devices daisy chained.

Also, I don't have a S1100 manual so I'm learning
as I go... (not so with my other units). so again,
thanks for the help.

Thanks

Re: S1100 effects and O.S.; manual; contest idea

2004-10-27 by formals777

For the manual, just look in the files menu for the S1000 manual. Both
machines are 95% equal.

BTW: I've been thinking about a small contest for the S1000/S1100.
Idea is that anyone can post a track in which a midi file and the
S1000/S1100 is used. All samples used should fit on a floppy. All
entries will be put in the files section so that we learn from each
other. Using the voting system, all group members can vote which track
is the best.
I got the idea from other newsgroups (eg mc909) where they do it
monthly. Anyway, it might focus the discussions on this newsgroup a
bit more towards creating music.

My S1100 should arrive in some days...
I thinks it's a great idea! Count me in!
PS. Any style goes? And if i get it right you may not use external effects, only the S1100 effects?

Steven,

The contests in the other yahoo groups have all kinds of styles.
External effects are of no use since you deliver the source: a midi
file and a floppy disk image. Maybe there will be people who don't
like it to share a source files, but I think the contest should be
just about using the S1000 and nothing else. That's the way they do it
in the mc909 group. OK, it's easier for them because mc909 is a more
complete production platform, but you can compare it with writing a
program for the commodore 64. It might be limited, but you can do
crazy things with it if you're good (look at www.prophet64.com: a free
TB303 and TR clone for the C64).

Re: S1100 effects and O.S.; manual; contest idea; announcement proposal

ok, here's a proposal for the announcement ; let me know what you think

Subject: [ANNOUNCEMENT] CONTEST 1 for akai S1000 / S1100 samplers

Message:

This is an announcement for the first edition of the contest for S1000
/ S1100 samplers.

Here are the rules:
1. The deadline of contest 1 is 1st of December
2. You send in 1 floppy image, 1 midi file and 1 text file (.txt) with
a description of your composition and the samples used. You can
download a program to create these floppy images from the files section.
3. In case one or more samples are copyrighted, you need to mention
that. That way, we will not publish the floppy image on the website -
but only an mp3 version of your composition. We prefer that you use
non copyrighted samples, or samples which are made by you.
4. All styles are allowed.
5. The contest is restricted to members of the yahoo
akaiS1000S1100Samplers group.
6. Maximum 1 entry per member.
7. Because contest 1 is a trial, all entries for contest 1
automatically enter contest 2. This way, the 'early adopters' have a
double chance to win in the second contest.
8. Every contest ends with a poll among the members.

note: - because of the problem of the copyrighted samples, it might be
an idea that we provide some links to copyright free samples.

It's sounding fine except:

>>...We prefer that you use
>>non copyrighted samples, or
>>samples which are made by you.
>>4. All styles are allowed.

I don't see the reason for this. We are
not involved in a commercial effort here.
You will be limiting a lot of potential
source material needlessly. A number
of styles of music are necessarily based
on using "copyright" samples.

Not to get into a religeous war, but I
just think this is perhaps overly pre-
cautious for 10 guys on the web exchanging
ideas.

I agree. I make music which uses almost only samples + TR909 sounds...
By the way I still don't have my sampler :( :( :( :(

So, its fine when I just delete the following phrase ?

As tbiggz said, its not an international MTV contest, just 10 guys
exchanging ideas. If its fine for you all, I do the announcement.

Greetings,

Overall, I think that's a more even message.

Additionally, even if we indicate use of copyright
materials, I think you should put the disk images up,
just stipulate that this is for a limited time.

I say this to protect myself too since I will use
drums that I value but that should not be copyright
by anyone; so they are free use to whoever gets them.

So that's the only other change:

a) mp3 posted for unspecified period
b) disk image for 1 month period.

I think there is no problem if you made the sample youself eg by
sampling a synth or an analog drumcomputer. However, when you copy
samples from a sample cd, you may create a problem when you distribute it.
I prefer that we do not distribute copyrighted samples which are
copied from a sample cd, even not for a month. There are enough
sources where we can get public domain samples eg for drums etc...
It might be even an idea to create a kind of repository for copyright
free samples for the S1000.

However, I cannot prevent you from sending floppy images by email to
someone else if that is part of a creative process.
