power supplies

Hi-

Would anyone like to recommend power supply replacements for older units (terminal strips/cinch-jones style)?

Are switching supplies alright?

Thanks for any help-

The standard Serge power supply uses a linear Condor or similar unit, carefully adjusted to +/- 12V.
Modern switching units MAY be ok but the cheap ones throw out tons of noise and have mediocre regulation.

A good off-the-shelf linear unit is not expensive and performs much better.

Also-are just 12 volt supplies alright or does it need to be +/- 12volts?
-Thanks for the education

How old is your Serge? If it's 1970s, you may need a supply with +12v, -12v and +6v.

Switching supplies are NOT alright for Serge. Use a linear power supply.

I have been using an Astrodyne MDMC-0306 switching PSU for some years.

Thanks-well 4 panels are from 1980 approx. and the other 4 i had Serge make around '86.

they all have red, black and white wires except the panel with the n-voice controller which has a green lead

-which i believe is 5 volts.

I'm trying to learn about supplies and it seems that linear - (which according to the fellow who checked over the

old supplies and is basically a mcintosh audio specialist are "not used anymore" ??) - supplies are better

for low noise and low ripple, analog circiuts, etc. - but now it seems that maybe a good quality switching supply

might work. ?

Mouser does seem to sell some linear supplies with +12/-12 but i don't see any from condor which is what was

first suggested (though there were a few low-power one's on ebay)

Please keep the suggestions coming as it's really appreciated.

It was tempting to paste some links but i didn't want to set off a spam alarm.

Thanks again

About the power supply specs... I think there are a few different basic issues at play.

1. Ripple and noise should be minimal... I think down in the 100 microvolt range IIRC.
Reason being, at 1V/oct, ripple of a few mv will be audible and you don't want that. Also, switching power supplies
generate high-frequency noise; older or el cheapo units bleed the noise into your audio path, raising the noise floor. I think newer,
pro-quality units may have solved this problem but don't count on a generic PC supply to do you any favors.

2. Long-term voltage regulation should be rock solid. Again, this comes down to tuning. If you spend hours setting up a patch
and go back to it the next day, you want it to remain in tune despite the mains voltage wandering, air conditioner kicking in, etc.

Power Ones are excellent if the model meets your specs. They are considered by most to be equal quality-wise to Condor. Many serious modular systems use them today, though of course they need to be wired properly and checked, they don't come as a drop in solution.

Though of course an alternative is to phone Rex Probe at STS and ask for advice. Doubt he'd give general DIY advice but I'm sure he'd have info (Apologies I missed the beginning of the thread)
