can we just rename this group "bakis' serge buy-sell-trade list"

it would seem no one has anything interesting to share regarding serge, only what they wish to buy, or sell or trade

time to unsubscribe I guess

I actually like Bakis' activity on this list. Seems to be an active user who makes music with Serge modules, and connects with the community here. What is wrong with that?

indeed. fifteen years ago this could have been called the "duval by/sell list" . . .didn't hear any complaints. Must admit though that the list has changed somewhat.
I'll take this opportunity to say "thanks you" to everyone who has purchased a copy or done a digital download of both my Serge CDs, Hells Canyon and Cassiopeia's Playground. There are only a few copies of Hells Canyon left at CDbaby which means that over the last nine years I've sold more copies than I ever dreamed possible. I figured I would be lucky to sell two or three. I got physical copy sale at CDbaby last week for the first time in several years. Woo wooo hahah
Many thanks to all
warm regards

I have a box of CD's in my garage, and I imagine the 10 or so sitting in some CDBaby warehouse. Everything for years (meaning, all five or six sales) has been downloads.

Still, it's exciting to get twenty bucks a year from CDBaby.

Congrats to John D on your success!

(Hi Ed!) Yes indeed, there is that aspect of his prior post - but sounds like you may have missed the 5-year-old-selling-Serge-modules-in-a-lemonade-stand behavior from months back that cemented the bad reputation (and reaction).

BTW - congrats John D for the cd sale numbers - good stuff. And when you were selling God's fingers you never pulled them back. ;-)

Quadslope is where the interesting stuff went.

Hi Bill! Hope all is well.

Well, I have been around the list for some time, not posting hardly at all, as my Serge related activity is minimal compared to other music work that has consumed me. I've seen the for-sale posts. Guess they just don't bug me because the overall traffic with this group is really really low.

I'm just about the opposite, building my first CGS supplied Serge modules last December. I'm now moving towards having mostly Serge modules in my modular having preferences to individual modules being used together to create the greater overall function, rather than all other manufacturer's modules having specific purposes.
This Group initially (last December) I had HOPED would be a great collective of Serge users. Barely a message is posted here nowadays though. Same thing at the Buchla, Serge, EMS section at muffwiggler (though a little heavier for Serge) and quadslope.com's Forum. Through this past year, it's been hard to find any populated posting area for Serge. That, is quite the drag. :(
Perhaps other Serge owners (purchased and DIY) see lesser of a need to post and share info? Dunno. Stumped.

This list IS a great collective of Serge users, hopefuls and interested parties. Those who have the most to contribute, however, don't say much -- for a variety of good reasons I'm sure. For my part, I haven't had time to mess with the serge in years. I did just give a talk at the university I work at, which was lots of fun but which is prob'ly my last hurrah in the field. Can't say it hasn't been fun tho.

Agreed - a lot of the interesting discussion has moved away from lists into forums - quadslope.com and muffwiggler.com to name a couple.

Think we here in this list are mostly folks who acquired our Serge systems in the very later '80s thru '90s (maybe I am wrong?).

I appreciate John P's honesty - time has been scarce. Last thing I did with Rex was come up with an Animoose, a two-panel system with a modified Ring Moo and a TKB with a built-in chromatic quantizer (one additional switch). Not much time to fiddle around with a 6-year old around, although I am in the process of rebuilding my studio in the hope of making some music soon.

Much luck there Bill. The 6 year old shall soon be 16 and the Serge
will last. :) Through all the research that I've done, especially
over the past year - I'm very impressed with Serge build quality. I'm
trying to maintain that myself in every Serge module that I build.
(Note: if I could afford to, I'd fly down to stay for a couple of
weeks to build my own custom unit at their factory. I'm not
completely happy with any of their non-custom units.)

Re: state of the SMOG

2012-11-05 by John Duval

would have to agree. There is a relative lack of communication of actual application on this list but that is not a unique situation. Even during the time I was in the midst of a very creative period during which my two CDs were being composed I did not share any of my patches or "discoveries" if they could be called that. I did not share for one very simple reason; I didn't know what the hell I was doing and thought my efforts were beyond pedestrian bordering on gross amateurism. It took me over three years to get up the stones to even consider asking Dave Fulton of Dweller At The Threshold to listen to this stuff and help me assemble it into the final form of Hells Canyon and another four year to approach Darrell at Earth Mantra to release "Playground". I suspect that this might be the case for others also. I will say that about a year after I had to part with my system that there was a period of increased activity with patch sharing and some great tips on uses for the DSG which I loved to read about but was sad that I no longer had a system to try out the suggestions. I guess what I would say to everyone after all this time is this: if you don't know what your doing, so what? post up the patch. If you do think you know what your doing and your a little paranoid that someone is going to jack your supposed "technique", get over yourself and share anyway. LOL. . what do ya think is going to happen? some producer of documentaries is going to use your noise floor as the backdrop for his next Oscar nomination? ok, i'm being over the top and probably unnecessarily sarcastic but y'all get my drift. No one here is going to lose out on a gold record because they shared a patch or a goofy idea. And then again for others this is just a fun little hobby or exercise and putting stuff up on the list is just not their bag.
I called up Kevin one day years ago with some questions about his take on the Wilson delay and FS, I was curious about how to use these modules "properly" haha. His response was "stop asking questions, roll up your sleeves and get your hands dirty like I did".
Sage advice from one of the masters.

Re: state of the SMOG

2012-11-05 by Richarius Molindarius

I've been working with modular synths on and off since 1986. Until I got my first Universal Slope Generators built last December though, I'd only ever had physical experience with the ... as I refer to them overall - 'meat and potatoes' type modulars - Roland, Moog, PAiA, etc. The same basic architecture as most hardware synths that I've worked with on and off since '82.
Now in my almost year of playing with Serge modules, I've been able to begin wrapping my head around the complex simplicities of the Serge modules individually and collectively. But the scope of sonic possibilities from combinations of them are almost beyond full comprehension. In those regards, I'm always open to seeing how other patch things for certain sounds. Once I have an idea as to something, then I can veer off into my own universe of interpretations and modifications.
In time of course as with life, my wisdom as per my Serge will grow and deepen. :)

In the meantime, I'm collecting every patch that I see posted anywhere, as well as copying some that I see decipherably in videos and posting them in the Serge section of my modular synthesizer forum for my own and other's future references. (As I will be doing with my own patches ... if I could just stop building modules for a moment. Lol.)

Thanks man but really, what you should be doing is extending major sympathy to me for being one of the most stupid people on the planet for building a ridiculously overbuilt 27 panel system. It became an addiction. I think the final count was over thirty five panels built but I never had that many at the same time as I would shuffle things around when I needed funding for other projects or when I would have brief moments of clarity and realize that I had just too freaking much and had crossed the line and I would sell a few off. . only to be replaced with another "custom brainstorm". The funny part was that when my run was over I realized the the very first panel I ever laid out (with help from Rex) was the best one, . . the basis for most of what came after and my "go to" panel for the entire life of my system.
If you have twelve panels you have more than enough no matter what the configuration. All of Hells Canyon was composed and recorded using only four panels. Cassiopeia's Playground was done with not more than ten or twelve but that's pushing it. So let that be a lesson to all you "wizards" out there. If you can't get on with six to ten panels you need to take stock of your goals and if you can't make the grand modular symphony of your dreams with twelve to sixteen you might consider therapy. Kevin did most of his masterpieces with a sixteen panel system. . .yea, it was so heavily modified that most of us would have found it hard to deal with.
I still have another CD. . maybe two of material (pieces and sketches) that incorporate most of my later panel configurations but I doubt they will ever see the light of day. I'm just not that interested and life's circumstances kind of preclude that nothing will ever be done about that.
I don't miss my system; it was an embarrassment. I do however miss having a few panels to experiment and play with but that's just dream now. I'll settle now for my life long love the guitar.
The Serge Modular was an addiction that for some reason I couldn't shake. The first time I ever laid eyes on one panel was at the Oakland STS office and two thoughts formed immediately in my head; one: I don't have the slightest idea what is going on here and, two: I can make music with this.
my two cents worth

Sympathy not! :) The lessons that you learned and this wisdom that you gained from and through that entire period, brought you to where you are right at this moment. It were a collective experience required to be able to move forward in your own direction.
As I looked through the list of modules that were in the 2003 photo yesterday, with only a year of Serge owning under my belt (combined with the previous 12 years of modular building) saw module excesses (the VCOs especially) and other parts missing or inappropriately chosen - imho - as a collective towards a whole. But that's ok ... the experience gained, good or bad, paid for it all. :)

One keypoint to remember here for composition with the # of panels had is where, the word in progress, is going to be recorded to. Ultimately, a multi-input / multi-track recorder, is the greatest desire. One that can sync to the Serge for later overdubbing.
That, is my key area of lacking. A few years ago I had bought the 2nd hand m-Audio 1010 - 10 channel bi-directional interface for recording. I knew a fair bit less back in those days electronics theory wise (not that I know that much more now! Lol ). Setting it up to begin learning and working with it, I spent days trying to figure out where the 60hz hum was coming from in my modular. (Weeks or months later, finding that I had 2 Ground loops causing it.) It took me forever and a day to realize that the trouble was inside the m-Audio 1010 itself and had to be repaired - which with all of the changing that continually occurs in my modular, I never did get TO.
My entire point of this portion being: I never have BEEN able to afford a multi-track recorder beyond 2 tracks, that also has Sync In and Out for overdubbing whilst recording from my modular. I've always had to have enough of the modular built, to be able to compose everything that I wished for a piece, to a single recording.
(Yes I could do overdubs afterwards. Being a 'sequences' nut, from 30+ years of listening to Tangerine Dream / adjusting the sequences live, for change / live improv., I far prefer being able to sync things together ... in immediacy / as opposed to practicing my keyboard playing chops over and over and ... (my own fault, there)).
Which brings me to my overall point - since coming back to building modular gear again in the Summer of '05, my monster had been continually growing towards having enough 'voices' and sequencers that I felt comfortable with (hardware sequencers instead of MIDI), to compose.
Continually building; trashing; building new; refining and all that rot, by last November, I'd felt that I'd finally reached the point where I could begin composing with everything that I had built. And then, the 'Serge desire' that had been floating around since getting my 1st catalog from Rex back in '92, bit me again. And THAT is where the direction that I was headed changed, completely.
Sound - is basically my life. Creating it. Editing it. Making new explorations of moods; in change; over time. The 'standard' / 'meat and potatoes' type modular gear that I had been building for 6 years hadn't been able quite, to approach what was in head; my desires. All of the reading / studying / learning that I began doing in earnest last November finally opened my eyes to new ways to get to where, I wished to be in creating new sonic movements. The basics of operations from the Serge modules were my 'key'.

And that John - is what I've been doing on and off over the last year. Purchasing Serge Tcherepnin approved PCBs from cgs.synth.net ; modifying some of them (including giving the Programmer Sequencer, the same functionality as the Moog Q960 Sequencer - play / skip / halt per step, in both directions) and building my own Serge PCBs from schematics.
My desire which had partially been, to have a monstrous system and moreso - to have a powerful system has been slightly modified now from the long posting of your own: further clarity in the modules that I feel will be most useful to me in creating the audio that I wish to - will help me choose how many of which other modules that I will build from here on as well as which of the older 'meat and potatoes' modules that still exist in my system, may no longer be needed. (Partially, to assist in keeping my system to a manageable size.)

At the mo' I've between 3 to 4 full panels of actual Serge modules, with my entire monster being somewhere between 10 to 12 Serge panels in size. There's more fine tuning to do; what to keep and what to scrap and replace by the proper Serge modules that can cover the scrapped functions as well as do other functions. And to be able to do as much of it in one take, with as little overdubbing as possible.

Thank you greatly for all of the experiences that you went through John, that brought you to where you are in life at the moment - to create that huge post that has helped fine tune my direction. I shall now reach my destination far quicker than I would have without reading that. :)

And the guitar ... my first instrument learned and played, 40 years and 2 months ago. I rarely touch it nowadays. It can't assist my travelling towards my destination in much of any way. (Though, the bass guitar can and does. ;) )

Respect.

Re: FS: Serge ASR/Quan m-odule, (960 euros Total)

2012-11-06 by John Duval

we seem to share similar directions. Sound has always been my passion or maybe I should say "textures". That's what led me to have a rather large guitar collection when I was playing professionally. Each one had it's own voice and I used them all but after awhile dragging a van full of guitars on the road gets to be a hassle . . unless of course your Steve Earle and can afford such extravagance.
My module selection and compliment in 2003 was indeed lopsided but let me assure you that you can never, ever have too many VCO's. period. I was also heavy on the voltage generator side but that came from the fact that I instantly fell in love with the DTG and it is two of those under manual control that are responsible for the audio in almost all of the cut Paleozoic Twilight. I flipped out and had a bunch of those in my system. Other favorite and most used modules were the ASR and PDIV. I also can't stress enough that in a medium to large system mixing and discrete outputs are critical. .at least for my application. Also i must add that Rex and Kevin both said that after a certain level of panels mixing ability becomes critical. I had the ability to create eight separate "voices". as it were. .or maybe "sections" is a better choice, all running concurrently or against each other. In this way I was able eliminate the tedious chore of overdubbing, something that was kept to a minimum on both releases. I think there are only one or two overdubs on Hells Canyon and Paleozoic Twilight was recorded to two ADAT XT20s with one overdub. Sleepy Hollow was done in one pass on eight tracks. Hells Canyon has a little studio trickery (track one is the end of River of Fear played backwards). Cassie's Playground is straight off the master tapes; everything one pass, eight tracks or less and a few were just free running patches with a little real time manual "playing". I used a lot of sequencing using two TKB's and a few of the smaller Serge sequencers. I had no dedicated VCA's. . major bummer but that just highlights my lack of knowledge of the paradigm. A Mackie 32x16 was used to record Hells Canyon while a Soundcraft Spirit 32x16 was used on Cassiopeia's Playground. Reverb and delay by Lexicon. I don't use computers.
I've been a guitar player for over fifty years so returning to that is warm and fuzzy. haha. Like you I was a big TD fan from the very first time I heard them in Jan of '73. Some late night radio show played Phaedra and I just flipped out. Bought the record and read the equipment list on the back and just went "huh?" what the hell is this stuff? LOL. At this point i gotta say that what really opened my ears to this paradigm was Carlo's Sonic Seasonings. ."Winter" scared the crap out of me. hahaha.
A few production notes you might find interesting. The piano and strings on the title cut "cassiopeia's playground" is a Kurzweil module of some sort and a K2000, one take. 2705 I'm using all the PCO and NTO's at once with their use being split between the slowly rising background and the melody line. The rising background with melody following is being controlled by a SSG and DSG.The melody line itself, I'm playing a K2000 into a Encore midi to cv converter. Took awhile to get the whole "sound" set up but once I had it the piece was recorded in two takes. Saturn Serenade: Strings I'm playing a K2000, main sequence is a free running Oberheim Cyclone driving a Waldorf Micro Wave xt with a secondary sequence generated by a TKB into various PCOs and filters. .standard stuff. All the intro sounds that run throughout the piece and take the song out are being generated by a free running (custom voice programming by me) Oberheim 10 voice OB-Mx one of the most maligned midi sound modules ever produced and next to the Serge the most wonderful instrument I've ever had. The tune was recorded first take, no rehearsal.
In the end I'm just happy that a few people have enjoyed my efforts. Thanks to all.
warm regards

(Though, the bass guitar can and does. ;) )

Respect.

John! YOU were / are owner of Fist of God? OMFG! Major bows of respect to you for amassing THAT monster! The couple of pics that I've seen of it ... to me ... that would be a heaven to be lost within! My current equivalent of 10 to 12 Serge panels is a meer speck in comparison to the size seen in pics of the Fist of God. :o
Chilling wonderfully at this mo' to Midnight From Rigel. :) From what I've heard in the 1st 5 minutes of it, I'm greatly looking foward to the rest of the album. :O :D

(I be an ol' timer who 'grew up' on Tangerine Dream, Jean Michel Jarre, etc., with dreams of creating similar and inspired by, some day. :) I hadn't been able to get close enough until this year due to not having enough of a modular built, yet. )
