Re: state of the SMOG

2012-11-05 by Richarius Molindarius

I've been working with modular synths on and off since 1986. Until I got my first Universal Slope Generators built last December though, I'd only ever had physical experience with the ... as I refer to them overall - 'meat and potatoes' type modulars - Roland, Moog, PAiA, etc. The same basic architecture as most hardware synths that I've worked with on and off since '82.
Now in my almost year of playing with Serge modules, I've been able to begin wrapping my head around the complex simplicities of the Serge modules individually and collectively. But the scope of sonic possibilities from combinations of them are almost beyond full comprehension. In those regards, I'm always open to seeing how other patch things for certain sounds. Once I have an idea as to something, then I can veer off into my own universe of interpretations and modifications.
In time of course as with life, my wisdom as per my Serge will grow and deepen. :)

In the meantime, I'm collecting every patch that I see posted anywhere, as well as copying some that I see decipherably in videos and posting them in the Serge section of my modular synthesizer forum for my own and other's future references. (As I will be doing with my own patches ... if I could just stop building modules for a moment. Lol.)

would have to agree. There is a relative lack of communication of actual application on this list but that is not a unique situation. Even during the time I was in the midst of a very creative period during which my two CDs were being composed I did not share any of my patches or "discoveries" if they could be called that. I did not share for one very simple reason; I didn't know what the hell I was doing and thought my efforts were beyond pedestrian bordering on gross amateurism. It took me over three years to get up the stones to even consider asking Dave Fulton of Dweller At The Threshold to listen to this stuff and help me assemble it into the final form of Hells Canyon and another four year to approach Darrell at Earth Mantra to release "Playground". I suspect that this might be the case for others also. I will say that about a year after I had to part with my system that there was a period of increased activity with patch sharing and some great tips on uses for the DSG which I loved to read about but was sad that I no longer had a system to try out the suggestions. I guess what I would say to everyone after all this time is this: if you don't know what your doing, so what? post up the patch. If you do think you know what your doing and your a little paranoid that someone is going to jack your supposed "technique", get over yourself and share anyway. LOL. . what do ya think is going to happen? some producer of documentaries is going to use your noise floor as the backdrop for his next Oscar nomination? ok, i'm being over the top and probably unnecessarily sarcastic but y'all get my drift. No one here is going to lose out on a gold record because they shared a patch or a goofy idea. And then again for others this is just a fun little hobby or exercise and putting stuff up on the list is just not their bag.

I called up Kevin one day years ago with some questions about his take on the Wilson delay and FS, I was curious about how to use these modules "properly" haha. His response was "stop asking questions, roll up your sleeves and get your hands dirty like I did".
Sage advice from one of the masters.
warm regards

This list IS a great collective of Serge users, hopefuls and interested parties. Those who have the most to contribute, however, don't say much -- for a variety of good reasons I'm sure. For my part, I haven't had time to mess with the serge in years. I did just give a talk at the university I work at, which was lots of fun but which is prob'ly my last hurrah in the field. Can't say it hasn't been fun tho.

I'm just about the opposite, building my first CGS supplied Serge modules last December. I'm now moving towards having mostly Serge modules in my modular having preferences to individual modules being used together to create the greater overall function, rather than all other manufacturer's modules having specific purposes.
This Group initially (last December) I had HOPED would be a great collective of Serge users. Barely a message is posted here nowadays though. Same thing at the Buchla, Serge, EMS section at muffwiggler (though a little heavier for Serge) and quadslope.com's Forum. Through this past year, it's been hard to find any populated posting area for Serge. That, is quite the drag. :(
Perhaps other Serge owners (purchased and DIY) see lesser of a need to post and share info? Dunno. Stumped.
