Help on repairing a Gentle Electric PEF

Help on repairing a Gentle Electric PEF

2011-05-12 by k.gstettner@consequentaudio.com

Hi,

Currently I have an old 4 panel system at restoration at Kevin Fortune in the US. (I'm from europe)
Incorporated is a not too happy GE PEF module that Ken has trouble to tackle since there is no available schematics.
As most of you veterans know, the PEF has potted submodules by Entle Electrics and was not an original Serge design.
For me playing cello this module is really important so I try to do whatever is possible to help repairing it since to find a PEF panel for sale is really hard.
If it's the pots then I'm out of luck anyway but to even know that for sure Ken would need a working unit as a reference.
So I came up with the idea to ask around if a US serge owner would be so kind to have his panel shipped to Kevin for a few days (I'll happily pay for the shipping) so he can figure out what's happening.

cheers

Kaus

Hey, Kaus, this is Carl Fravel, original founder and designer of the Gentle Electric PEF.

I have a Gentle Electric page at www.gentleelectric.com. There's a link at the bottom to my personal website and blog. You or your tech can contact me via the form there, at http://www.fravel.net/contact-me/ I can probably provide schematics and some email assistance on repairs. There is a very good chance that the problem is not in the potted modules, there isn't anything especially fragile in them, unless most of the semiconductors got fried on the board anyway.

Best of luck in getting it repaired. If you decide to abandon the attempt, please don't discard it, I would prefer to refurbish it at some point.

Also remember that GE are not the only way to get pitch->CV into a synth. With my early Serge I use a PV-1 module with decent results. It has a complicated lineage... It was from the Moog Etherwave, and Dr. Moog gave Harry Bissell permission to do a PCB run of the circuit, and he released it as a project via Tom Gamble's EFM. If it helps, the manual is still online kind courtesy of Mathias Hermann:

Mind you, I am practically tone-deaf, and should probably not have any pitched modules anyway! But it seems to work. So if your GE PEF can't be revived, there is still hope.

:-)

Better than I hoped !!

And I think I'm covered now ...

Thanks again to everyone offering help, I'll report when I have it back, I also got anothe unit on the way to my place that I can check out for operation.

If I forgot to PM back someone who resonded, there's so many things going on at the same time.
I also can only encourage anyone in need for repair and calibration to give the system to Kevin Fortune. I've been updated daily on the status and got a small insight on the expertise and energy he devoted to restore my 4 panels - Kevin rules ! ! !

Thank's - this is really interesting too, specially the documentation.
I don't know the GE works a bit different - in the block diagram is a "fundamental extractor" mentioned.
If I had access to a PCB etching I would build one in any case just to compare with the GE (which I hope will be fine now - if the obsolete parts can be found to restore it.
At least I can say I had any kind of help available !
