Serge PSU cases

Serge PSU cases

2009-07-03 by John Loffink

Does anyone know who manufactures the case used for the STS Serge power
supplies? I am making a power supply for an older system with 6 volt
power and thought it would be nice to match the current PSU cases, plus
I like the wrap around ventilation.

I think Rex might do them himself..when I talked to him the other day he said he'd spent the day bending sheet metal for the larger power supplies..

I doubt that. Maybe Rex was bending sheet metal for an interior bracket?

These cases are not something that could be built in anything less than
a fully equipped machine shop. For instance there are weld points for
the bottom plate and the front O channel ring. The fact is these look
nicer than the Bud and Hammond cases I've seen.

When I talked to Rex in '02 he had the power supplies built by a third
party.

you may well be right, that's just the impression I got when talking to him.

When I talked to Rex the other day he mentioned bending sheet metal for a power supply. He's building some super duper supply for Bakis. I'm fairly certain the ones he uses for the masses are made by a third party. If I remember tomorrow I'll email you what my power supply says on it.

I have a 2 panel and 4 panel PSU. I took the 2 panel one apart and
couldn't find any name on it.

It think I am going to settle for a Hammond Enclosure that is somewhat
similar, with venting only on the edges, not wrap around.

I just got my power supply last week and along with the power rating
info it says this:

Elizabeth, NJ
MIKS20-14

When I worked with Rex at STS in Oakland I built many, many PSUs. The chassis box was manufactured by LMB, I believe. I haven't seen a "modern" supply from STS though, so I don't know if that has changed. LMB boxes were light grey with rounded edges, top, bottom and sides perforated with ventilation holes, and inset end panels of a darker grey. Excellent enclosures.
