Scope?

Scope?

2009-04-23 by johnrichoux

What a great forum! Thanks to everyone who chimed in on my last question - they were all very helpful.

I Wish I had some kind of scope. If someone can recommend an inexpensive one that would interface easily to the Serge that would illustrate what's going on in the audio or CV, that would be appreciated. Not that I trust my eyes more than my ears, it's just that sometimes I can't quite figure out why things happen or don't happen.

Right now I'm experimenting with the ADSR and NCOM, learning how to detect stages. I can detect the peak of a DTG, but it doesn't seem as easy with the ADSR. And it makes me curious about possible differences in the range of output voltages from various CV sources.

Have you found a scope helpful/educational Serge-operation-wise, or a dead-end distraction from useful-enjoyable-(musical?) audio-mangling?

Thanks again everybody

I use the MFB videoscope module with my modular. It's not the highest quality scope but it works with any TV that has a video input and it was less expensive than other second hand scopes I've seen. You could probably get a VD-01 a Format Jumbler in a mini case and you'd have 12 more hp for other stuff you could use with your Serge, of course if you don't have any other euro modules and you just want a scope you could probably get better advice from someone else.

The Owon PDS5022. It's not a great scope, but it is a $300 one.

It's no Tektronix, but it's also _way_ cheaper than the cheapest Tex,
which is about $1000.

The oscilloscope used in the Doepfer A-197-2 is a Velleman VPS10 - you
can get one for US$234 - nice little gadget.

Resending since my previous attempt seems to have disappeared into the ether… (sorry if this shows up twice)

So, how do you interface your scope with the Serge? For example, the Owon & Velleman have BNC connectors. Do you use a probe or some kind of BNC to banana adaptor?

Thanks for your responses

Some scope probe kits include a 4mm adaptor, but most don't.

These sort of things are easily available:

http://www.testpath.com/Categories/BNC-to-Binding-Post-Adapters-1218.
htm

and will accept 4mm plugs.

Or buy some 50 ohm BNCs, some banana plugs and some wire, and DIY...

You can build an adapter pretty easily. You can get banana and BNC connectors/jacks from RadioShack or another electronics store and connect the two together (either by soldering, bending wires, or just using alligator clips.) I'm using the last approach and it works just fine for watching signals from a synth. It's a little hacked looking, but it works and its cheap. I can post some pictures if what I wrote above isn't clear.

As far as scopes are concerned, you can sometimes find one pretty cheap at thrift stores/pawn shops/craigslist. eBay has a good selection of older ones too. You can pick up something like an Eico 425 for $50 or less on eBay.

This looks neat.
Can I just hook up a BNC to Banana cable to the front of this anf go, or do you need to use the proper 1x/10x probes for this to work?

Move to quarantaine

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
