SSG Operation Question - Help!

SSG Operation Question - Help!

2008-01-07 by legion01x

I am trying to use the Smooth stepped generator module and I can't seem
to get anything out of the bottom half. I've read the wizardry pages at
Egres but am coming up blank.

I'll be the first to admit I don't fully understand this module but I
can't seem to get any CV or audio out of it and the light never goes
on. The Smooth part on the top seemto be working ok although again i
don't fully know what it does. at least I can get sound and the light
blinking on that.

Can anyone tell me a quick patch or two with the Stepped generator part
so I can verify it's working right? Perhaps something with on VCO or
even an internal patch. At least something to make sure it's accepting
a sigal and the light is triggering, etc.

Please be patient as I'm not even sure exactly what are inputs and
outputs for what on this thing. Then again I guess that's half the fun.

All help GREATLY appreciated.

Thanks!

Hi,
Take an audio signal, could be the "s/h source" out of the Rand
Source, a signal from an osc, or a DTG clocked at audio rates.
Anything really, but those are safe bets. Anyhow, take this into the
IN jack of the stepped generator.
Now take the Gate Out of a DTG and patch that to Sample on the
Stepped Gen.
Turn the Rate knob all of the way up (CW). The light should start
blinking.

I think it may sometimes get stuck... rather, my brain gets stuck..
but I have a moment of freakout every once in a while. It usually
ends up being that the Rate knob is down and therefore the samples at
the input are not advancing.

try this:

set up an osc so you can hear it
patch stepped out to 1v/oct of osc
turn rate knob fully clockwise
patch a varying voltage to in on the ssg lower section
patch a trigger ( could be gate out on a cycling dtg or dsg ) to sample
on the ssg lower section
now it should works as a sample and hold that sample the signal on the
in jack
everytime it gets a trigger on the sample jack..

Hi,
Try this:
Patch white noise to Stepped IN and a DTG or DSG in Cycle mode (or with TRIG patched to GATE) to Stepped SAMPLE. Stepped RATE knob should be fully clockwise. Now the light should be blinking!

Thanks to everyone for the quick and thorough suggestions. I think my
fears are realized as none of these patches with a trigger or noise or
anything seem to have any effect on the Stepped section nor do the knob
do anything even when I go out the coupler output (The knobs modulate
from the smooth section when going out the coupler).

It's odd that the top section works fine and it's only the Stepped part
that is out. I'm not about to go poking around in there but if anyone
has any idea what might be wrong based on what's in these puppies at
least I'd get an idea of the damage for repair.

I've contacted the seller so we'll see how it all pans out. At least I
have a few DSGs and a WAD to play with in the meantime :)

Thanks again, this is a great group :)

Offering this as a possible clue: The SSG was mentioned in a recent
post about things that can go wrong. Be careful not to patch outputs
to outputs, often you'll get away with it but not always.
