what sequencer do you use?

what sequencer do you use?

2007-05-04 by cray5656

I am looking to do some dance trax and dont have any kind of step
sequencer , i am looking to get an mpc2500 and maybe a monomachine to
do the sequencing/drums programming and trigger the Serge....I would
be interested to know what other people use.

I thought you had a TKB. Do you want a MIDI step sequencer?

I do have a TKB, but it seems more suited for experimental timings, I
want tight MIDI step seq.

you can always take any MIDI->CV interface and connect the gate out to
TKB's clock in and programme a bar of 16th notes in your MIDI seq..
this will allow you to get the "tight MIDI step seq".. I usually find
it a bit mechanical sounding, so I'd pass the gate out through
something like a DTG before sending to the clock in.. this will allow
you to create "grooves", if desired..

another option is to take a MIDI drum machine that sports a trigger
out (like a 909).. sync it to MIDI and drive the TKB with the trig out..

hope this helps in any way
cheers

E-mail me privately if you are selling an STS TKB in excellent to mint
condition.

Wonder if a Revolution might be easy solution for what
you describe.
http://www.audiochocolate.com.au/ sells them in
Australia.

Re: what sequencer do you use?

I *just* got an MPC1000 wanting to experiment along similar lines -
that said, there are issues to contend with related to the MIDI/CV
worlds and related to your specific application.

Looked at both the MPC and the Elektron, and think you can't go wrong
with either, but they are different beasts. The SPW1 version gets
closer to the MPC, but IMO the Elektron is more of a synthesis
machine vs. the Akai, built as a sampler. Chose the 1000 because of
price, storage expansion, portability, because there is a huge
community of Akai users using/supporting the product, and because I
didn't need another synthesizer (heresy!).

When using the MPC as a live master controller/sequencer (meaning you
are using the MPC pads to control the Serge in real-time ) there
could be MIDI->CV delays in the MIDI chain resulting from MIDI + CV
interface traversing.

The MPC pads/sequencer would trigger internal sounds faster than they
would on external devices - normally such delays are negligible, but
hard to tell until you have your setup/events completed.

There are known physical issues with the MPC1000 pads, but the 2500
should be ok as they use the same pads as the rest of the MPC line
(500 excepted).

Also watch out for any MIDI/CV interface configuration quirks/delays
- mileage will vary depending on what you use: Expressionist, Kenton,
MPU, Doepfer, et al.

Routing Serge audio back into the MPC for WAV resampling would
probably be what an MPC user would do to take advantage of the quick
pad triggers, as opposed to controlling the real McCoy live all the
time.

Can't tell at this point what the issues would be when attempting to
lock an MPC to a TKB/Programmers, haven't done it yet with the 1000 -
I am at the beginning of the trek too, so don't know if it will work
for me yet.

Hope this helps.

Regards,

Bill
