Banana Plugs

2007-01-12 by riluttante

Hi everyone,

I know the general opinion here is to use Pomona brand banana cables sold by STS
amongst others (rather than soldering your own or using other brands), and I've ordered
several sets of these from Rex for my new system.

However, I'd also like to make a custom breakout cable to interface my Serge with other
gear and for this I'll need 32 male banana plugs, the stackable kind (does anyone even
make non-stackable ones?)

If they're not too expensive I'd like to order 32 of these plugs from Pomona, or from
another brand if it makes a big difference in cost.
I searched the Pomona website using the "banana, plug, stackable" and other searches but
got confusing or no results.

Can anyone recommend a brand, model and/or source for stackable male banana plugs so
I can solder my own cable?

Thanks very much!
Thomas

The Mouser or Digi-Key catalogs both have banana plugs, stackable and
not, from Pomona and other
makers. There are other online suppliers too - Allied, Newark, etc...

Far as I know, banana plugs come non-stackable (just a banana tip coming
out of the plastic case and the wire going out the other end),
stackable, and stackable with the horizontal hole. fun for the whole
family.

Thanks, John!

I'll start wading through that Mouser catalog...a "banana plug stacking" search returns a
few hundred results, but I'm probably not filtering it right.

Does anyone here happen to know the exact Pomona part number of the stackable plugs
STS uses when they make their own custom cables?

Re: Banana Plugs

The cables from STS are made by Pomona as they are a single molded assembly.
There are no part numbers for the Pomona stackable plugs. Outside of STS
and Cyndustries, it is difficult to find the multi colored banana cables.
Allied Electronics sometimes carry them. Red and black is most common, used
for test equipment.

I have seen stackable plugs from some vendors, probably one of the discount
electronics sources. I couldn't find any in a cursory search though. Rex's
own banana to 1/4 inch adapters are non-stacking.

Electronic Goldmine has non-stackable banana plugs in five colors, search
banana:
http://www.goldmine-elec-products.com/default.asp

A quick Google search turned up this place with stackable banana plugs in
five colors:
http://www.abra-electronics.com/catalog/terminals/kan_4b.html

If you are making 1/4 inch to banana cables, you should build the 1/4 inch
side as normal with tip and shield ground signals, then cable both all the
way to the banana connector. Simply don't terminate the ground connection
and make sure it doesn't short to the signal. This will give you shielding
of the signal all the way to the banana connector. You'll ground your Serge
to the equipment through a separate connection.

This are the best I've found and at good price (of course the more the cheapest)
Johnson are solid and feel nice in your hands. You could use black plugs and colour cable.
Pomona (or other brand) cables are too expensive imho.
MOUSER
Johnson:
black: 530-108-1083-1
red: 530-108-1082-1
white: 530-108-1081-1
Kobiconn (cheaper but not so nice):
black: 174-R819B
red: 174-R819R

John P, John L, Bob, Johan, Ken, Fernando,

Thanks very much for all the banana plug advice!

I'll order a pile of the Johnson stackable plugs from Mouser
530-108-1083-1

At $1.35 each for an order of 25 this looks like a good alternative to those Pomona cables,
for those who don't mind soldering. I've ordered several sets of molded Pomona cables from
STS too, though. These plugs are mostly for adapter cables to other gear.

Hi everyone,

As some of you kindly suggested on this list, I bought several Johnson brand stackable
banana plugs, Mouser part number 530-108-1083-1.

Now that I have them in my hands, I'm not sure whether these are meant for solder
connections or not, or how to open up the plugs later should that become necessary. The
plug covers don't screw on and off, they simply click into place.

Is one supposed to solder the cable to the plug, or fix it otherwise? Would you run the
cable through the sideways hole first, and then try to make the solder connection at the
side of the plug somehow?

Is there a way to open up the finished plug once the plastic cap is clicked into place
without damaging the parts somehow, so I can use the plug again with a different kind of
cable, in case I decide to do so?

I will be using these to make a cable-snake with 32 banana plugs on one end, and a 32-
pin D-sub connector on the other end. About three feet of cable in between. Even though
the connections aren't grounded (banana to 1 of 32 pins on the D-sub) would it make
sense to use shielded cable here?
What's the benefit of using shielded cable when nothing is actually connected to the
shield?

Thanks for any suggestions!

Thomas
