Analog Shift Register

2004-02-16 by zahir_manek

Hello,
Does anyone have any practical applications for this module? I've
never used mine, and I can't really think of a good use for it. I'm
sure i'm missing something.
Thanks

Well, you can always use it as a straight sample and hold...

these modules are the ones I'd wished I'd gotten the
resonant eq or another filter instead. The Gold
manual being my only guide, I haven't really figured
out amongst other things what the asr likes to have in
its sample in jack. Anyone up for sharing a wicked
patch ? - George

I don't use the ASR too much, but did this the other day and came up with a nice echo
effect:

Tune 3 Oscs to the same pitch;
Patch a clock to a Pulse Divider;
Patch PDIV /2 to Sequencer clock.
Patch PDIV /7 to ASR pulse in.
Set up a simple 4 step melody on a Sequencer;
Send Seq output to ASR sample in;
Send the 3 ASR outputs to different Oscs;
Use a different wave shape or wave multiplier for each Osc;

I experimented with different ratios but I liked 2/7 best.

There was a detailed article by Serge about the Analog Shift Register

in Synapse magazine around 1977/8. Cynthia is putting old issues

of Synapse up on the Cyndustries website (www.cyndustries.com), so

maybe the article will appear soon. It is primarily a construction article

but it does discuss using the module too...

Has anyone used this thing to process audio, at least in lower
registers? Seems if you clocked it fast enough, and mixed the outputs
you could get some weird phase shifty effects by modulating the clock
rate. Ditto for continuous CV signals like LFO, mixed LFO signals,
random CV, etc. Could somebody try this & report? I don't have one.

I'll give this a go when i take down the current
patch.

Douglas Lynner (the editor of Synapse) was a good friend of Serge and would stop by from time
to time back in the late 70's when I worked there. He had an ancient 6 panel system (even back
then it was ancient) that we were working on. Fond memories of that magazine and of Douglas. I
remember that when we replaced all the jacks on his beast, I used his old ones on my system. Much
heavier duty than the newer ones, with a solid metal shaft. This required the use of a nylon
washer to isolate the jack from the front panel. Every once in a while, there would be a stray
sliver of metal that would jump that gap (in the building process) and wreak havoc with the
testers. (The output jack on my upper Positive Slew if I remember correctly, eh Darrel?)

Ramble on,

Stephen
