loose serge modules ... please ignore

loose serge modules ... please ignore

2003-07-28 by John Papiewski

To satisfy my curiousity and kill some time this weekend I tried cutting
up a couple Serge panels into loose modules.... these are my results...

1. Tin shears ... a little slow and tends to curl the aluminum a bit.
Very hard to keep a straight line, even with a score line. You can
straighten out the curls with pliers and file the edges a bit.

2. Hacksaw.... also slow and hard to keep a perfectly straight line.
Less bending but still need filing.

3. Band saw. Much faster than #1 or #2. With proper blade & saw, good
speed & straight line. Note: watch your fingers.

4. Acetylene torch... faster than #3 but destroys artwork, jacks, knobs,
insulation and boards. Avoid this method.

5. CO2 laser ... surprisingly slow. heavy power consumption. can
maintain a straight line but many problems with melting, burned artwork,
etc as in #5.

loose modules for sale, all GC:

2 x PCO ... $290 ea
2 x DTG ... $290 ea

most of a ring mod (some cosmetic defects) ... $250

circuit boards - faceplates did not survive:
RS ... $300
SSG ... $300

cool 'Serge' jewelry:

assorted knobs, multicolored jacks, etc melted into colorful glossy
clusters... $15 ea

do not respond on or off list.

Thanks

John,

That's funny, just this weekend I did the same thing!!!

Except I used a cold chisel and a 4 lb. sledge hammer. Man, those faceplates are some tough
cookies! I got a pretty straight line on the front panel, though I totally crushed the aluminum
box that houses the units. To separate the circuit boards, I just bent the rails back and forth
until they broke apart. I'm pretty sure that I got the power supply wiring back in the right
places, funny how Rex uses black for negative sometimes and then uses red...

Oh well, time to go plug it in and see how well it all works now. I'd like to offer this
service to any other list members here for a nominal fee. Please supply extra boxes as they tend
to get a little chewed up in the process. Just email me here on the list if you're interested.

Quality module separation!

Stephen

John and Stephen:

I think you are doing a disservice in suggesting such crazy schemes to
separate out Serge modules. The best way is to insert the entire box
into a microwave. As long as the metals components don't arc together,
it's simply a matter of scraping the residual plastic melt off from the
face plate and separating the modules by gently bending the now
malleable metal faceplate where you want to make the division.

Cold chisels, tin shears, hacksaws! Come on guys, try to be
professional.

Now that's why I like SMOG... a virtual fountain of ideas, all for the
good of the group.

WoW!
Great tips guys THANX!
After using the hacksaw for a couple of inches, I found that my arbor-trim saw was MUCH faster!
Also, in the process of 'liberating' my TKB I discovered (to my great delight) that, depending on the location of the cut, I could produce, for example:
2 8-step sequencers (although only 1 of them had a clock input)
or
3 5-step sequencers (ala Buchla!) with a very unique 1-step sequncer left over
or even
16 1-step sequencers (each with diferent control inputs!)

Boy Howdy!!!!!! Ebay - here I come!
