TKB + Animal?

TKB + Animal?

2002-08-01 by circlesround

Hello again.
First off, I wish to offer my sincerest thanks for the kind and
patient replies to my prior post (with regard to driving an
STS 'Animal' with a Future Retro 'Mobius').
I have returned for a bit more in the way of expert opinions...
If I should decide to go ahead and spring for a TKB to use in
conjuction with a single panel system (I absolutely cannot afford
more than this, wish I could) - would the 'Animal' make a good mate
for the TKB? Or would the lack of the 'Quantiser TKB' module
(obviously not present on the 'Animal') render the capabilities of
this pairing less than useful (not getting the most out of the TKB
that is to say)?
If anyone would care to indulge me, I would love to hear any and all
suggestions regarding a possible custom single-panel (in lieu of
the 'Animal') to pair with a TKB ...
Thanks &
Best wishes,
Trevor

Well the quantizer is a handy thing but you can manage without it.
While I like the TKB I wonder it can do that the Future Retro can't.
I mean, doesn't the FR have some fancy sequencing? Pardon my ignorance, I
don't know anything about it, but don't all these MIDI gadgets
have sequencing?

The TKB is a very nice performance controller too.

I'm guessing that will be the overall opinion.
If very melodic westernised sequencing is what you are after, then you are
going to want a Quantiser in a hurry. People have got by without them
however. Don't forget you can use the touchplates to trigger each note for
tuning purposes. Also, the Quantiser can be used for other tasks as well as
sequencer quantising.

Two completely different approaches I think.
Similar to other 'analog' sequencers, the TKB can throw up surprises.
On the Mobius (or Fr777) it's up to the user to input all the information -
a much more laborious and thought provoking process.
On the other hand you can set the TKB off and twiddle until you like what
you hear. The Mobius has limited outputs and controls compared to the TKB's
myriad of inputs and outputs, let alone the 4 rows of tweakable knobs.
I found the TKB to be much more fun than the FR777. The TKB is also in the
top 2 or 3 sequencers ever designed IMHO.
The FR777 or Mobius is an excellent alternative controller however.
As for the Animal panel.....
When spending so much money there is no substitute for getting exactly what
you want. Is there a price difference involved? Is the wait longer for
custom panels than 'shop' panels?
