Matte paper scraped by printhead

Matte paper scraped by printhead

2007-03-11 by David Polcyn

Hi All, I hope someone can help. I just loaded my K-7 inks and
installed the rip and Epson R800 profiles and started with Epson
Matte/Hwt paper to get set up. The print looks great but there are
two lines of 3/8 inch scrapes just about the whole length of the
print. It looks like the print head or something else is making
contact. I put it back on the Epson print settings and it went
through fine. Is like the matte setting is not raising the print head
enough. Has anyone had a similar problem and is there a fix.

Thanks,

Dave Polcyn

I have had a similar problem. With the Epson printer driver, I use
the "Thick Paper and Envelopes" setting under Printer Settings -
>Maintenance->Printer and Option Information and it solves this
problem. Unfortunately, QTR does not have a similar option, which
severely limits the range of papers that I can use with QTR...
effectively ruling out most matte papers.

Re: [QuadtoneRIP] Matte paper scraped by printhead

I haven't heard of head scraping on the R800 and people use a lot
thicker
paper than Epson HW Matte.
It's hard to visualize what you mean by 3/8 inch scrapes but I suspect
that
you are getting some banding or roller wheel scrapes.
In the email you sent me you used 1440 resolution. The R800 is best at
2880 dpi and that is what all the K7 profiles are designed for. The
other issue
is that the print top and bottom areas are always more prone to banding.
Leaving more white margin is a good idea.

Re: Matte paper scraped by printhead

2007-03-13 by mattchapin2

Hi Roy,

This is a problem I have had with Epson HW Matte as well. The print
head scrapes the paper and scratches the ink right off - so the
scratches are spaced at 1 per print head pass across the paper.

This seems to be caused because the Epson HW Matte paper swells a
bit when it is saturated with ink... and this paper is VERY easy to
saturate with ink.

Since HW Matte paper is thin, it does not exhibit the usual "thick
paper" problem of the print head knocking against the edge of the
page at the beginning or end. But the swelling is a problem.

Using the Epson driver, I have resolved this issue by using
the "thick paper and envelopes" setting.

On account of this problem (most paper is either too thick, or thin
enough but swells up) I have definitely had trouble finding matte
paper that does not require the "thick paper and envelopes" setting
for the R800.

Has anyone else had any luck?

Thanks!

Matt

Re: [QuadtoneRIP] Matte paper scraped by printhead

2007-03-13 by David Polcyn

Thanks for your prompt reply. I changed the driver to 2.5, installed
the profiles, changed the resolution to 2880 and now it takes a sheet
of paper and seats it, then runs it out without printing. At least
there are no scrapes this time. Thanks for you help,
Dave Polcyn

Re: Matte paper scraped by printhead

2007-03-13 by Gary A. Reese

I can get scraping on my 4800 using Enhanced Matte paper when the head
passes over and over the print after its final step advance. In another
words, at that point when it seems to take forever to finish printing before
finally ejecting the paper. I get around it by keeping my 2880 printing at
High Speed. I looked at the pattern with a loupe and concluded I have no
alignment problems in high speed, so I'm using it.

The problem first manifested itself when I was doing a large number of
prints at one time. I don't like wasting ink and paper, so I haven't tried
to duplicate the problem with other papers. But if I go out of high speed,
the scraping does return.

Re: [QuadtoneRIP] Matte paper scraped by printhead

2007-03-15 by David Polcyn

Dear Mr. Harrington,

Thanks for your help. Since the note in QTR says that you don't have
much info on the Epson R800, I will share my experiences so far.
Attached is a close up of the "scrapes" from my first email. I
finally got everything going by resetting the printer system and
tried again. The first time through produced one line of scrapes
instead of two. I changed to byedirectional from unidirectional and
it printed fine. the Epson matteHW looked really good. I tried the
Han fine art pearl set to fineart proof and it really blocked up. The
Hanphotorag looks really good with the appropriate curves. Next I
tried the Han WmTurner and it would not seat, it just passed it on
through. I tried three times and even restarted the printer. The last
time it passed it through and took the next sheet of paper which was
the Epson MatteHW and it was the best print of the night, although it
looks a little damp (imagine that) but it has the most detail and
separation in the shadows. Attached is the info from your script.
Thanks for taking the time to keep your work current and I hope this
helps a little. At least it is no longer scraping. After all this I
will have to send Jon Cone another $150 for some more ink. Maybe I'll
try the split-tone this time. Well I'm getting sleepy.

Hope to hear from you soon.

Re: [QuadtoneRIP] Re: Matte paper scraped by printhead

Thanks to Matt and Gary for your input Matte. I reset my printer
system and reinstalled both the Epson and QTR software and it seems
to be working now after I switched to by-directional.

Happy printing!

Matte paper scraped by printhead (1280)

2007-03-19 by Rob

I'm having the same problem described by others on my Epson 1280, but
none of the suggested solutions seem to work.

The printer is already on the thick paper setting. Changing to
bidirectional did not solve the problem.

On my latest print, I got a fine scrape along both edges using
Hahenhumule Photo rag duo using bidirectional. I ran a test using the
Epson settings on the same print and there were no scrapes.

I got quite a noticeable scrape using Epson Velvet Art again using
bidirectional.

I have had no problem so far using Photo Rag Bright White which is
only a slightly lighter grade of paper.

And the scrapes on the Photo Rag Duo seem to be inconsistent, while
several pictures I have printed on the 1280 using QTR have scapes, a
couple do not and there seems to be no reason why.

Re: Matte paper scraped by printhead (1280)

To answer my own question after further tests, I found that working
on 1280 wide margins seem to solve the problem. With at least a half
inch margin (at least on letter size paper) there is no scraping or
thin lines on the print. With that success I went back to
unidirectional printing with no problem.
