Yes, that is very helpful, the Model 17 is now on my short list!
Re: the audio delay, what I usually do is take the delayed (wet) signal only and using a single repeat only (very low feedback aka regen) so I can delay the entire pattern by a set number of miliseconds (using the DD-20) and then run that into a gate extractor. Using a regular gate delay you can only delay until the next drum hit. Any longer delay and you start to lose hits.
It's also fun to crack up the feedback occasionally to give a "burst generator" type behavior, but I understand this may
not work 100% depending on the threshold setting as you were saying.
