I usually connect the shield to only one end to minimize the risk for ground loops. Yeah, stripping and connecting all those 4 core wires is a pain! The reason I make my own cables instead of buying the manufactured molded ones is mine have just enough stiffness so they don't just droop down into all the module panels. In addition to interfering with knobs and switches, those thin molded cables are much harder to visually trace since they're all laying flat on top of one another other on the panels like a spaghetti rat's nest.
