Re: [PLAN_B_analog_blog] Plan B patchcords

Hi Peter,
What is it about the Doepfer cables, with the larger connector bodies, that make them work better with Cliff Jacks?

Is the actual plug thicker? Or is just the barrel bigger?

In regard to the other post on patch cables, we've looked into it a
while back, I actually had the rep form Switchcraft out because i was
interested on the 1/8th inch type Buchla used to use (with the real
small connector bodies) they still make them but their wholesale price
at a quantity of 1,000 is over $5 each. Hello?

If you're planning on making your own, cool, but you may be asking for
a world of hurt. There's nothing worse than a shorted patch cord, or
one with intermittant connection. Then you have to ask yourself what
are the benefits of using super high quality components given the
wattage tossed around by a Euro grade synth. Bottom line, the sealed
housing add a lot to the long term reliability of the assembly - the
sealed housing you can't do if you make your own.

There's another option - buy cheap ones knowing that when they go, you
can just throw them away and feel good about that because they cost
next to nothing. Case in point: All Electronics sells 2 foot 3.5
mono cables...at $1 a piece for quantity 1, which goes way down to
$.65 at a qty of 100. And you know what? I bought a bunch of the
lesser expensive Doepfer cables, the ones with the larger connector
bodies which work better than their expensive ones with CLiff jacks,
at the same time as about 50 of the All cables. Half of those Deopfer
cables are now dead.

None of the All Electronics ones ar ewhich cost me 1/4 the price.
SOmething to think about.
