Wow! Pinder signed tron on Ebay...

Ah yes... Seller was born yesterday, no picture, no reserve with a starting bid of 0.01...
"This Mellotron is equipped with 3 different string sounds / Violins... Email for my phone # if you want to hear the sounds.. A volume, tone, tape selector, and pitch knob are your controls."
Fantastic!!!

So, which one of you guys am I bidding against?
Seriously though, I saw this late last night and for laughs put in the first bid...not knowing what kind of bid session occured previously.....and not knowing the condition or shipping arrangements.
Apparently the last bidder that won this backed out (I couldn't find a record of the bid - it must have been awhile back).
What did I miss last go around....?

You are bidding to be ripped off. This guy does not have the Mellotron he is
describing. That I can assure you. Notice also that there are no photos and
that the seller has no history. Do NOT try to win unless you want to kiss your
 money goodbye.

Isn't it like the 4th time on eBay for this one?

BTW, I have a Pinder signed DVD that I got from his website. How
much is that worth? OK, I'll give you a dollar to take it.

This was on ebay a few months ago. At the very same time, TWO people
in China were offering the very same one (including the same pic
already).
I know the Chinese are adept at copying the design of instruments,
but this is ridiculous!

Be aware, and ignore accordingly.

Bernie,
You can wet the signature from the DVD and place it on your tron... Perhaps the ink will soak in and you too will have a Pinder signed Tron... (that can only be read in a mirror...)

What Martin didn't tell you that he sold me his Citroen XM estate with
dodgy rear brakes from endless loading of Mark 2s and 400s. Mind you,

As any fule kno, no self respecting progger uses a Mellotron without
28 chord changes in the first four bars. Then it's time to get REALLY
complicated............

I was in a hotel back in 1972 having breakfast. Mike Pinder walked in and I
had him sign my pancake. It is somewhat brittle after all these years, but I
glued it to the underside of my Tron lid. Does this count?

An ivory tinkler with hot beat combo the MB five, who later
transformed into the Moody Blues. Legend has it that they did quite
well in the music business.
Before he gave up his day job, he used to take Melly Mark 2s for test
drives - and probably worked out a few classic riffs for the future.

I contacted him and got him to send me some photographs. Not a bad trick
for a Mellotron he hasn't got any access to. I could also swear that
I've seen the pictures elsewhere and that they were nothing to do with
him...

His name is (allegedly) Frank Dulak <frank_dulak@...> and here are
his pictures:

http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c27/MikeDickson/Dulak-1.jpg
http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c27/MikeDickson/Dulak-2.jpg

http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c27/MikeDickson/Dulak-6.jpg
http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c27/MikeDickson/Dulak-7.jpg

One has to wonder how and when these pictures were taken, and why they
were never posted to the e-Bay page from where he was selling it.

PS The images named DULAK-6 eithers shows an extreme aide-memoire or the
allegiance to a well-known and notorious Scottish pop band of the 1970s.

I find it interesting that there are photos of the insides but no
photo of Mr. Pinder's signature!!?!?!?! Strikes me as just a bit odd,

These photos have been on eBay before. I recognize them all. I also do not believe they are all of the same machine. However, some of them were from a previous listing of this machine by the legitimate seller.

Well, for what it's worth, these photos were taken in Pontiac, Michigan. The sign outside the window says "Royal Chiropractic and Dental Clinic" and there's only one hit on Google for that name. You could probably use Google maps to find the address of the house that housed the Tron. (Business at 530 W. Huron).

From Frank Dulak's photos:

Nice detective work, Bob. And you are right, it was in Michigan. I have a
friend who was going to go look at it who lives nearby. The seller was a flaming
asshole though. I know at least once he had a friend place a "winning" bid
so that he could try to establish it's value. He also listed it on the Detroit
Craig's list trying to get $3,000.00 for it after he couldn't sell it on
eBay. As I recall, the first time it was listed on eBay he was asking $10,000.00
for it as a "buy it now," price. Then, when it didn't get a bid, he relisted
it with a BIN of $4,500.00 I think. That was the auction when the "friend"
bought it. The seller then listed it a third time and claimed that the buyer
in the second auction (friend) backed out of the sale. It was all bullshit,
but he really did own the machine. I do know that the person who bought it
lived in or around Detroit.

I sent the guy a few emails offering to buy it (cheap). He was not very nice.

I looked back in my records and it appears that Bernie Kornowitz bought news
of this machine to the list back on 12/7/05. It was indeed listed for 10,000.

The second time it was listed was 12/22/05. the seller was "perkinsestate"
The auction ended on 2/2/06 with a winning bid of $2,135.00 and was "won" by
"hoondogdetroit". So my recollection was a little of, but the "winner" is the
seller's friend. the seller listed his location as Pontiac.

On January 6th it was put up on Craig's list in Detroit for 3K or a trade
for a B-3.

Here's some more stuff from back then...

 I
think he might be about 16 years old, so it must be Mom and Dad's money. He
said that he originally sold it to someone in England but didn't explain

was re-auctioned. It is now on Craigslist. BEWARE!!! Something smells
real bad about this. It also looks very piece-of-shit-like to me.

PS. If anyone wants Mike Pinder's name on the cabinet lid of
their Mellotron, send it to that guy. I'm sure he can crank them out.

On his last auction, he said the winning bidder from the prior
auction backed out.

Bernie..."

Then on 2/26/06 I alerted the list that it was back on eBay again. That time
it apparently sold.

So my facts were a little off.

Anyway, oddly enough, the seller this time has no eBay history and either
does the winning bidder. I expect we haven't heard the last of it yet.

Thing is, I remember a few years ago finding a website where a fellow
named Chuck described taking the lid of his M400 to a Mike Pinder book
signing where he had it signed by Mike. Photos of him standing in
line, Mike with pen in hand and so forth. I can't seem to find that
site now but it might be interesting, if Chuck can be found, to ask
him if he still has that unit or if he has sold it and to whom. Makes
me wonder if the 'seller' is selling a "collage-o-'tron" made up of
photos from the web and stories from a number of different machines.
Of course we all know he's out to rip off some unsuspecting person, or
if he isn't, he needs a lesson in how not to appear to be a crook!

Just got the my copy of "Recording the Beatles" and I am quite impressed. It is written by Kevin Ryan and Brian Kehew. Very, very well done with info on all equipment, mics, amps, guitars and yes, mellotrons. A comprehensive overview of the art and technique Martin and company used to capture their sound and with the Lewisohn book "The Recording Sessions" one can really get an accurate account of the Beatles sound.
I highly recommend this book. I can't wait to get home and dive into it as I am at my office and can only glance through it.
