Focus

I was listening to Moving Waves yesterday for the first time in ages and
I noticed that Thijs van Leer used Mellotron strings in quite a few
songs as well as what sounded like to me trumpets in a section of
Eruption.Am I correct?I looked on Andy's page and he didn't mention
Focus.Did Thijs own one or borrow from a studio?

Yes I do! Try: http://www.planetmellotron.com/revf3.htm#focus Don't know if
they ever owned one, although I'm told Thijs plays one on the DVD of them
doing 'Hamburger Concerto' in '74. 'Moving Waves' has some great 'Tron
stuff, chiefly the gorgeous 'Le Clochard'.

RE: [Mellotronists] Focus

2006-08-18 by Brundage, Jim

Thjis had a white M400 in his live rig for at least a few years. They
first used it on "in and out of Focus" in 1970 but live footage from
that time is almost non-existent. No tron at the "live at the Rainbow"
show in '73 but definitely on the Old Grey Whistle Test footage in '74.
I have seen Thjis with the M400 after Jan Akkerman left the band and
Phillip Catherine joined making it as late as 1976 or 1977 that he
toured with one. Jan Akkerman was and is a monster! Voted best guitar
player in 1973 by guitar player magazine beating out Clapton, Terry Kath
and others at the time. Phillip was another great guitar player.

A-ha... Thanks for that, Jim! Thijs used my M400 at a London gig a few years
ago, too, but disappointingly, barely touched it - just a few chords on
'Eruption'. Some twat of a roadie also stuck a monitor on top of it while I
was in the pub. :-(

Akkerman was stunning, but I refused to join in with those who reckoned the
recent reformation was redundant without him. His replacement was excellent,
whereas Akkerman was pretty dull when I saw him a few years ago, obviously
getting amusement out of deliberately playing Focus stuff badly.

Akkerman dull? That's too bad. I cant imagine.

Tedious jazz noodling for much of the set.

I would have loved to see
him at any point in his career! He was a big influence of mine but
rarely did he come to the states. Thijs played your tron? How cool is
that!!

All a bit odd - he was going to borrow Duncan's (not sure how the deal was
arranged), who pulled out and asked me if I'd step in! Did, but as I said,
was barely worth it, and got some new scratches on the lid for my trouble.

Any one else?

Um, the reformed England, the Flower Kings, r.m.i. (they used two that
night) and above all, \ufffdnglag\ufffdrd (in Belgium). My bloody nephew's just
written a website (pretty good for an 11 year-old) about something I don't
understand 'cos I'm too old, in which he takes the piss out of me on a page
entitled 'Mellotrons', including a comment about taking it abroad. Yes, I
did. And the problem is? :-)

Andy T.

p.s. Said nephew is going to get his arse kicked the next time I see him.
