21st Century Schizoid Band

21st Century Schizoid Band

2002-05-15 by kinchmusic@aol.com

For those who can't get down to Canterbury in August, the guy's are due to
play at The Stables, Wavendon, Milton Keynes here in the UK
on Sunday 15th Sept. The box office number is 01908 280800.
How's that Mk 2 shaping up Martin?
For those who don't know already, this is the closest we'll ever get to the
original King Crimson line up. Michael Giles. The wonderful Ian McDonald.
Peter Giles. Mel Collins. Jakko M. Jakszyk, (is this JJ from "The art of
Noise)? Whose on vocals? Where's Greg Lake when you need him?
I can't wait for this. Material from the classic albums we all love is
promised.
For anyone who doesn't know The Stables. This is one of the smallest and
therefore most intimate concert venues on the Planet! There really isn't a
bad seat in the house.
It's owned and conceived by Johnny Dankworth and Cleo Lane, so acoustically
it's as near perfect as you can get.
GGGGreat!

21st Century Schizoid Band

2002-08-25 by Tim Griffiths

I have just got back from seeing 21st Century Schizoid Band and thought they
did very well for a band on their first outing. They were all obviously
nervous particularly the Giles brothers but they managed to navigate their
way through 'Pictures of a City' as an opening number without stumbling (as
Jakko Jakszyk said: "we thought we would start with an easy one!") and did
justice to ITCOTCK, I Talk to the Wind and Cat Food.
The surprisingly strong numbers were Formentera Lady and Ladies of the Road
which became quite hypnotic as they progressed or that might have been the
passive smoking of herbal cigarettes kicking in.
JJ did a very good job of hiding Robert Fripp's absence but I do hope he
turns off the auto pan on his guitar in time for the Milton Keynes concert
which I will also be at.
The absence of Mellotron was more obvious. At the beginning of the concert
someone in the crowd yelled "where's the Mellotron?" to which JJ replied "do
you know how heavy those f*** are? we have it hidden in little boxes around
the stage" but I think he may have regretted that later because Mel Collins
managed to lose his string patch before one number started prompting Ian
McDonald to jog across the stage and fix it and, excrutiatingly, Ian
McDonald's synth stopped working near the end of Epitaph and the song had to
be brought grindingly to a halt. It was fortunate that the final song 21st
Century Schizoid Man relied on the twin saxes of Ian Macdonald and Mel
Collins to power it along.

This is your roving lurker signing off.

Synth? Epitaph?

So you're not happy then, Mike?

He's not the only one! I've got to sit through this concert in 2 weeks time.
However, I'm heartened by the fact that the tron sample that Ian McDonald
used on the Steve Hackett "Tokyo tapes" concert did sound pretty damn good to
me considering. In fact the version of ITCOTCK they performed was excellent.
I would love to see Steve Hackett play guitar in this band and, of course
Greg Lake on vocals. His voice was so plaintive on the early recordings,
-just right. Everything was right.....Ah....

As I have the DVD version of Tokyo Tapes I can tell you that Ian is not the
one using the Mellotron samples. That was the other keyboardist Julian
Colbeck. Ian was using some sort of synth string patch and was playing block
chords while Julian played the main Mellotron riffs.

21st Century Schizoid Band

2002-09-15 by kinchmusic@aol.com

Hi all.
Just got back from a fine gig at The Stables, Milton Keynes. The set included
21st Century Schizoid Man. Epitaph. ITCOTCK. I talk to the wind. Cat food.
Pictures of a city. Plus music from Ian McDonald's solo album and Michael
Giles one too. To me though, a revelation was JJ (ex Level 42) on guitar and
vocals. He really carried the band, singing and playing with much energy. His
voice matched the older material so well and his guitar work was as good if
not better than RF himself!
I hope some of are able to see the band for yourself sometime. It's well
worth the price of a ticket. No mellotron though, just some poorish samples.
Highlight? Definitely Epitaph. The words somehow seemed to take on a new
relavance..."The fate of all mankind I fear, is in the hands of fools".
Cheers.

To all our UK friends,

If you get a chance then try to catch the band in Southampton tonight(The
Brook - 02380555366) and on Friday in London at the Mean Fiddler(08701 500044).
We saw them last night in Bilston and they were fantastic. New for this tour:
A Sailor's Tale with an authentic guitar solo per Islands and Starless. No
'tron but still absolutely mesmerising.

Best,

Martin's right - stunning gig, although the band are effectively a high-class tribute outfit. They're starting to put a couple of their own songs in the set, although comparisons are unfair. Highlights? 'Cirkus', 'Court...', 'Epitaph' and the cheeky encore of 'Starless', although I believe both Collins and McDonald played on the original.

I wouldn't consider them to be a tribute band! How do you pay tribute
to yourself?

At the moment I think it's more like a strange sort of reunion tour,
but hopefully they'll start playing more new material!

Well, it ain't Crimson without Fripp... I didn't mean it as a put-down, and
they were fantastic both last year and this, but it's not *actually* King
Crimson.

Hopefully it'll have more character than the stuff they've played so far.
Not bad, but a bit faceless.

Has anybody seen these guys? I think I recall quite a few postings a few months back and they were quite favorable. Just want to double check. I may be in Georgia at the time and wondered if it was worth a catch. Don't think they use a real Mellotron though.

21st Century Schizoid Band is a five-piece band comprised of ex-King Crimson members Ian McDonald (keyboards, saxes, vocals), Mel Collins (keyboards, saxes), Peter Giles (bass, backing vocals), and Ian Wallace (drums), with Jakko Jakszyk (guitars, vocals). In essence, this is a King Crimson all-star team that performs music from the first five Crimson albums, and it has a surprisingly large amount to offer. This line-up is what Crimson might have become had it splintered in a different direction or two after 1969. The group possesses of a lot talent and is still inventive on the old repertory

I made some reference to them being a 'high-class covers band', but they were also one of the best bands I saw last year, against stiff competition, and if they can't play that material, who can? Fripp's never going to play that stuff again, so at least someone is! Highly recommended.

^^^^^ wooooooo! hooooooo!

I'd better start letting locals know about this. Not to be missed. Any
other SoCal dates? (Los Angeles or San Diego area). I'll make the drive
down to south Orange County if this is the only gig, but I'd much rather
not have to drive 100+ minutes in each direction. I'm sure folks in San
Diego feel the same. Too bad they weren't coming sooner. I bet they
could have played at Baja Prog 10 days ago.

Sheeshe, their website doesn't list a way to contact the band.
So I took the weenie approach and added an entry into their guestbook
suggesting that since they were coming to California anyway they
really ought to hit San Francisco.

(Although, as I understand it, Crimson Mk 1 broke up on the trip from
Los Angeles to San Francisco in 1969. "No, guys, hit San Francisco
*first*!")

Pete Sinfield is recording a new solo CD and the Schizoid Band will
be on it. In recent years, Sinfield has done lyrics for Cher and
Celine Dion. (Gotta pay the bills somehow).

Is that right???

Perhaps I could motivate my Cher-obsessed/Celine Dion-loving girlfriend to accompany me to one of the Hollywood or SJC shows if I could sell her on the "common ties..."

With that in mind, could you possibly say which songs between the two our Mr. Sinfield has an affiliation with......???????

Sinfield lyrics -

Heart of Stone - Cher
Call The Man - Celine Dion
Think Twice - Celine Dion

I Believe In Father Christmas - Greg Lake
Karnevil9 - ELP (I forgot about that one!)

And would you believe...
Have You Ever Been In Love - Pete Cetera (Chicago's singer, bass
player)
Looking Throught The Eyes Of A Child - Eddy Money (oh my God!)

and PFM...

Not a bad career for a roadie. (KC sound board and stage lighting)

As I understand it, Celine's handlers just selected those for her from lyrics Pete had written, and that they weren't specifically done for her. Probably the same for Cher.
