Hi Steve,

You need to tell us more. All 400s were white melamine (as far as I know). What year is it. What tapes did it have?

Best wishes,

Robert W

melamine?

mine is white laquered (painted) wood.
(i even have the name of the company that manufactured the paint
somewhere... john and martin probably know this one also...)
every other one I have ever seen is such.
(aside from the black one some of us saw at philly-tron this year)

i thought melamine was plastic-like substance?
(like... linoleum or something...)

Dear All,

There's a moments confusion - no Mellotrons were in white melamine unless you were Paul Mc. and had special EMI 400s to contend with.  I would suggest that Steve's machine was a custom job.

Cheers,

hello all,
thank you for your response.
to address all your queries ---
firstly the mellotron was used on the road in both my band and the
subsequent owners band in and around the north of England/Sheffield etc.
as far as I was aware melltorons were finished with the wood carcass
painted/sprayed white not covered in melamine.
this is certainly the case with this model as it was covered in the stuff
whilst in my ownership.
melamine is a thin plastic like veneer applied to all sorts of products as a
hard wearing protective finish.
the machine had the normal standard flutes/violin/cello tape rack and also
choirs and something else on a spare rack.
I do not know the serial number unfortunately.
It was bought from me by a chap nicknamed Horse (drummer) and used in his
progressive rock band in Doncaster.around 1980 ish.
it had a home made white padded cover fluted at the front.
thanks for your help.
If streetly are reading this further to my enquiries a few months ago I am
still searching for this particular machine which is of sentimental
importance to me - can you help?
Steve Davis

Hi Stephen

Hello John
No it wasn,t Limelight - but what a brill band they are/were.
I remember watching them as a mere slip of a lad and just watching in
amazement - far too good for a club band dont you think?
what happened to the brothers Scrimshaw?

Well, oddly enough, I spoke to Glenn Scrimshaw a few weeks ago, after being
put onto him by the guy who bought his Mellotron, only three years ago. We
talked about Limelight for a while, then he said I should come to see him
play in his Queen tribute band, Mercury, when they played London. I duly
did, and had another chat, and I'm supposed to be calling him back soon, but
as a working musician he's out most nights.

Pat, Limelight's drummer is also in the band, and his brother only left them
a couple of years ago, and Glenn was talking vaguely about the three of them
doing some Limelight-type stuff sometime, but I suspect it's a case of
'don't hold your breath'.

Oh, and when he asked me 'What got you into the Mellotron', I answered,
'You!'. They were the first band I saw close up with one, and I was always
fascinated by the thing. And the rest is history...
