Mellotronists

Hello all,

This past weekend Lee Richards and I invaded Jerry and Mali Korb's 
Mellotron Ranch (thank you for the hospitality, JK and MK!).  We put 
together a little tune to demonstrate Lee's repaired #541 and Jerry's Mark 
I "Julia", with the Korg X3 piano patch played by Van Cluckburn with 
mittens on (it was cold up there in Vermont!).

There'll be more of a trip report to come.

Ironically halfway around the world YLE Radio 1 in Finland was featuring a 
show on the Mellotron and playing cuts from "Improvised Waves" and will do 
so again this Sunday evening.  They'll also air "Leaving for the Black 
Sand", the tune out on the link above, and other things from 
you-must-check-them-out EM bands like RMI.  (Unfortunately, no, there's no 
streaming...they cut out all music streaming when people were getting 
twitchy about copyrights a few years ago.  :-(  )

But if you can get YLE Radio 1 and would like to hear Part 2 of their 2006 
salute to the Mellotron, tune in to Avaruusromua!

That's quite impressive, Ken! Looking forward to the rest of the

I was right-there when KL and Lee practiced and recorded the tune.
A few bars sounded familiar, but from an Eric Clapton solo piece,in a different
key of course (literally).  -JK-

P.S: Never saw the Lion King, so I can't compare

Let me clarify, I don't hear Elton in Ken, but if you listen closely to 
my album, you can hear a small piece of "Yankee Doodle Dandy" in "Over 
you" and here is also a small excerpt from The Four Season's "Save it 
for me" in "AmiEveliano". Ahh! Rediscovering the wheel.

John Williams stole whole bars (knowingly IMHO) from Eric Korngold's 
score to "King's Row" for the main Star Wars theme and the Jaws tension 
  riff is directly from Dvorak's "New World Symphony".  Barry Manilow 
had Disney's "When you wish upon a Star" in his cranium when he wrote 
"You deserve a break today".  Go ahead, sing em.  Currently, Holst's  
"Jupiter" is making the rounds as the fodder of choice for up close and 
personal compositions for the Olympics.  I won't go into Coldplay, that 
would be too easy....and there was no intent in George Harrison's "My 
Sweet Lord". To me, that song has a soul apart from "He's so fine"

Good day and thank you for all the nice replies all you nice Mellotronial 
people out here!

But as Captain Tenneal(1) would say in his own inimitable style:  You were 
all...wrong.

I realized that chord pattern wasn't Debussey, Gary Busey, Buford T. 
Pusser, Holst, Holsters, Holsopple, Howe, Dewey, Cheatem, Elton John, 
Macca, or my co-worker Bob who had too much cabbage last night and can 
actually squeeze out a Doric(2) scale (he is descended from the Romans, you 
know).

"Leaving for the Black Sand" seems to employ similar chords to the chorus 
in "Isn't Life Strange"---the "Wish I could pee in your eyes" part.  No 
bloody Elton lions, no Clapton "Tears in Heaven".  Just pee.  Unless Elton, 
Eric, Justin/John, Lee, and I are all on the same wavelength somewhere...or 
maybe this is just a popular run.  OK, it's easy for Van Cluckburn to play 
and was a good base for Lee to put down some decent melody lines that now 
won't leave my head.

And you won't "hear Elton in Ken,"  Sir Fritz of New Domicile.  I don't 
swing that way.  Still, there's nothing wrong with "rediscovering the 
wheel," as you say, and everyone should have your album "The Feeling of 
Far" (www.fritzdoddy.com - don't delay!) if they haven't yet discovered it 
for the first time.  Further, for a full stereophonic intercourse with Mary 
and her little lamb, check out "As the Water Recedes..." on the "absolutely 
essential Mellotron album" called "Improvised Waves" (www.kleonard.com - 
only about 798 copies left---and someone in Finland is getting one of those 
precious items in the post soon!).  Recycling is good for the 
environment.  Just see what it did for Vanilla Ice...they found out he 
recycled, and he was soon gone from our environment.  Yay.

And Julia with chips in the veneer, Mr. Merbler?  Not on Jerry's watch!!!
