10K Mellotron...EMI slag...

2005-12-09 by Jack Younger

Hello all!
It's been awhile. Just curious. In our silly
friend's misguided Ebay auction he takes particular
care in pointing out that it is "NOT and EMI Kit" and
that it is a "REAL mellotron." Any other EMI owners
feel a touch insulted by this commentary? And I will
ask in earnest; Is an EMI considered less of a 'tron
in our community?

Dear All,

My first tron was an EMI that needed a fair bit of work to make it play
properly, still a Mellotron though...
(Never a kit either!)

Yes, Jack, it is a loser's mellotron. Please send it to me at once in
order to help redeem your image with the group.

I have an EMI tron as well. It has a rougher workmanship to it, but plays okay. I'm sure the head azimuth is off too. Because it was my first machine I have sort of a soft spot for it.
Acquiring it involved driving with some friends in a two seater van to Pennsylvania to pick it up. My first Mellotron quest.
Lots of fun watching my friends fall over in the kitchen chairs I put in the back of the van by the way, especially around sharp turns.

You know, Rick, I'm glad that you recognize this as well. I think EMI "Tron"
owners should have a separate Yahoo group so that we purists can remain
tastefully detached. I remember feeling the same way when my neighbor down the
street came home one day with a kit built "COBRA" sports car. He had the
audacity to think it was in some way comparable to my impeccably restored, all
original, Shelby built 427 side oiler. The nerve.

Yes. In this community it's viewed as a 'gay Mellotron'. Find your own

The EMI M400 build quality has been discussed many times. It is fair to say
that 'as built' they were not well contructed for many reasons. They are
usually out of jig and seem to have been constructed from ignorance.. Any and
multiples of the following normally applies: main frame skewed, keyboard
tight and difficult to remove/replace, pads offset to either right or left,
capstan not parallel, key depth suspect, under powered motors, unshielded
transformer etc.etc.. The good thing is that it can all be put right but with a lot
of effort. Macca has the last two EMIs built and they were honest to
goodness crap. A predigious customer but that mattered not a jot to the ham fisted
lads at EMI.

Martin

In truth, almost any Mellotron can be made good with enough effort and
$$$$$. When they are right they all sound good.

As the proud owner of a Steetly refurbished EMI 400. I can say without
hesitation that it plays as good as any tron I've played. However, this act of
resurrection couldn't have been achieved without the true genius of John and
Martin. Any tron can be brought back to life. It's just that EMI's have to be
brought back from a greater distance than others!

And have you played more than one? :-)

You ought to see their fake genius.

I think there might be a couple that were simply a matter of having
their last rites read to them. In fact I think I even supplied one of
them.

Mike.
This is my fifth tron. Yes, I know that makes me very old I know. But really, this EMI was in very bad shape when I got it. It had been unused for about 15 years. I know I only paid £400 UKP for it about 5 years ago, but I had no idea at the time whether or not it could be brought back to life. Enter John and Martin..God bless em!

Hey!
Sorry I'm so late to reply on this thread, but
I've been so busy. To the task at hand...
As for my EMI, it plays beautifully, and I've
played and fixed many a 'tron. I especially enjoy the
ability to tweak it myself to my own preferences until
it's right. With my EMI it has been expensive but the
sort of "frame off" approach taken with these things
allows that personal touch to go a bit deeper. It's
more gratifying for me to have resurrected a 'tron
from pure death (and believe you me, this machine was
worked on by everybody under the sun and pronounced
DOA many times).
Also, for you slaggers, I happen to think the
profile of the EMI is very sleek. You can have your
big, chunky key-fronts and your huge, clumsy
cheek-blocks. And that white! Yeesh, it's like a
piece of hospital gear! I'll take a deep wood finish
any day. It's like many women I've dated. Beautiful
but crazy inside.
All kidding aside, a 'tron is a 'tron is a 'tron.
It all comes down to what your tolerance level is for
obtaining a playable one. A "standard" will set you
back more money, but be playable sooner. An EMI is an
installment plan. Buy cheap, pay as you go. The
other perk is it's rarity.
     Thanks for your replies.
Cheers!

Thanks Frank.

Do you have any more photos of your current restorations? I'm sure
you've advanced a bit since the last set you sent me.

These women tell me that you're just like the EMI: made out of flimsy
wood, cheap, and you only last for eight seconds.

Don't you know that Mike Dickson is our resident cynic? It's humor, dude.
He's not taking a cheap shot at anyone. I, however, will take any shot I can,
cheap or otherwise.

I guess you missed it again. Let me guess. Mark?

Look back at the posts about the EMI Trons. We're all just kidding. Any Tron
is a great Tron... Once you get them right. The truth is, EMI Trons
sometimes take a bit of extra work. We're all just goofing. Feeeeeeeeellllll the love.

The fact is, most often, any nut cracking is done with humor. Look for that
first. (apologies to our female members).

Merry Christmas

EMI slag...hold on a minute here...

2005-12-18 by Jack Younger

Fellows,
Once again, my attempts at sarcasm get lost in
the communicative disaster we call Email.
Don't misunderstand my retorts to Mike's charming
banter. I'm not taking anything personally, at least
not from however many hundreds of miles away. It was
pretty funny. I just figure, the official cynic
should be able to officially dish it out AND
officially take it, and he does, don't you Mike?
     Don't worry, Frank. I don't think Mike's weeping
in a corner somewhere.
Cheers!
