They don't get mentioned much round here, do they? I've just bought
their retrospective collection 'Sun Set' and it's undeniably impressive
(or at least the first half, comprising '3:47 EST' and 'Hope' is) and as
far as the first album is concerned it's Set Mellotrons To Stun.

An interesting band - 'Hope' is unfairly overlooked, for some reason,
yet it was quite a phenomenal compositional effort and perhaps one of
the best examples of how to blend an orchestra and a band *properly*.
It's just a pity thy were a victim of their own hype and a few rather
idiotic rumours.

I agree on all counts. I love the first two albums, after that they
really lost the script.

It's only you
It can't be me
For I myself refuse to be
I am someone you'll never know
I am the little neutrino

And now I'm passing through
The one who is known as you
And yet, you'll never know I do
I really do

I have always loved Klaatu.. Especially the first two albums. On 3:47 EST is a tune called Sub Rosa Subway. This is about Alfred Beach, who with his own money, excavated under Broadway and in 1870 built the first subway in America. It used the same pneumatic tube principal that banks use today at their drive-thru windows. Tons of information available on the net. And it was just as described in the song, with giant aquariums, a grand piano with a pianist playing Brahms and Mozart, giant crystal chandeliers... Amazing.
Also, I particularly like the song. "Hope" It is, after all, the greatest gift of all.

Terry Brown - Producer / engineer contributed a great deal to the
early Klaatu recodings. Terry worked with The Who (Substitute) and
Manfred Mann (Quinn The Eskimo) in the UK in the 60's (recording
engineer). He moved to Toronto in the 70's and produced Klaatu and a
bunch of Rush albums.

Not to mention the Mellotron. I wonder what ever happened to it.

Correct me if I'm wrong, Trontonians, but doesn't Andrew Seiger own it?
It's either him or the estimable Daniel Miso (so famous the Japanese

Hi All,

I've just been listening to "Calling Occupants of Interplanetary
Craft" by Klaatu on UK 70s Prog Rock Greats (Live365.com). Great tune
with some nice MkI/II (I think) in it. This is the only tune by them
that I vaguely remember. Can y'all recommend some of their better
albums (CDs for those who don't remember albums) in this style? I read
that their later stuff was disco-ish, so I wouldn't be interested in
that (or their rap stuff, if they ever did any of that).

Bernie,

"Calling Occupants" was done on an M400, not a MKII. I did an instrumental version a few years back on my M400 and the Mellotron sounded pretty close (except for the backwards intro I threw in there). I had the MP3 out on my "TronSounds" web site for a long time before the site went down. Let me know if you'd like to hear it, I'll send you the MP3.

I think the name of the first Klaatu CD was 3:47 EST, and it had a big picture of the sun on it. Their best stuff was on that album (CD). Along with "Calling Occupants", a song named "Dr. Marvello" featured Mellotron (flutes & 3-violins), but I can't recall any others with Mellotron. "Subrosa Subway" is another great song fron that CD,and "Little Neutrino" has some interesting synth sounds. None of their other albums featured Mellotron (excep for a snippet here and there), or had songs as great as the first one, IMHO.

Their first is good, but their second - 'Hope' - is probably better.
Their others charted a fairly steady decline, though.

interesting that the Carpenters chose to cover this tune late in their career....did they use a

Ken, do you know if they used the M400 Violins? The string sound
on "Calling Occupants" seems to have a sound very similar to the
MkII 3 Violins. I have the MkII 3 Violins on my M400 and they sound
quite a bit different.

And yes, I'd love you hear your version :)

RE: [Mellotronists] Re: Klaatu

2006-05-08 by Chris Dale

As far as I know it's the same sound but eq'ed differently.

There's no doubt that it's a 400. The 400 Cello sound is in Calling
Occupants as well, and the present owner of the Klaatu tron (can't recall
his name) was at Tronto in 2001 I believe.
Dan Miso - would you remember who this was?

When the Klaatu album first came out in 1976, there was a lot of speculation
that it was the Beatles reformed under a new name. The main hint being that
one of Ringo Starr's album covers had Ringo dressed as the Klaatu character
from The Day The Earth Stood Still (a superimposed face over Michael
Rennie's). There was also the vocal style in Sub Rosa Subway which emulates
McCartney's singing. Ditto for Dr. Marvello (George Harrison). Also - no
production / music credits were listed anywhere on the album. And Little
Neutrino has to be the only song lyrically accurate about sub-atomic
particles passing from the sun!

This group seems to be the type to be interested in trivia, and if I'm wrong
I'm sure I'll be corrected severely and savagely, in fun of course.
Does anyone know the significance of the time "3:47 EST" on Klaatu's album?
I do and I'm curious to know if it's common knowledge or not.

If it was a low frequency flange then it was due to tracking error.
Vinyl mastering engineers HATE low end flange/chorus/stereo doubling.
hard to get the lathe to cut it.

Not quite - each member of Klaatu had a Mellotron of their own, all of
which feature on 'Calling Occupants'. They sold them in the 1980s to
raise some cash for an ill-forsaken studio project that came to nothing.

In 1998 I had the following exchange with Jaimie Vernon, then of Attic
Records and major Klaatu fan. He said...

It later transpired that they bought one each and couldn't decide who
was to play what so they played them all.

It's funny how things turn out; back then, Jaimie was running a small
repress label in Toronto. When I aske him about the availability of
Klaatu records he went out to an indie shop in Canada and bought them
for me. Now he has the rights to some of the opublication of their back
catalogue and put together the 'Sunset' retrospective boxed set for
them.

That rumour was started by an Australian DJ who really should have known
better.

And don't forget that "Sub Rosa Subway" came out shortly after McCartney's album "Red Rose Speedway". Another "clue"....

Yes, you will be corrected severely and savagely and maybe beaten with a
wooden stick by Martin!
(at least I'm told it's a wooden stick! :)

3:47 - if I'm not mistaken, is the time the spaceship lands in the movie (or
is it the time everything is brought to a halt?)

This now reminds me that I have to finish restoring a 1920's milkshake maker
(there's one of the same model in the movie)

Then again I could always use Rick Blechta's MK II. It also makes
milkshakes!

Does anyone know the significance of the time "3:47 EST" on Klaatu's album?
I do and I'm curious to know if it's common knowledge or not.

More Klaatu Trivia:

The inspiration for the Song "Calling Occupants of Interplanetary Craft" was a magazine article from the late 1940s or early 1950s describing a "World Contact Day" that was being proposed at the time. The idea in the article was for everyone to "close their eyes and concentrate" and contact space travellers through telepathy. If I remember correctly, the article actually started out with the words "Calling Occupants of Interplanetary Craft!, Calling Occupants of Interplanetary Craft!"

Do any of these word sound familiar? Most of the lyrics appear to have come directly from this article. I couldn't believe it when I read the article. I had always thought that the lyrics and idea for the song were totally original. I still give them (Klaatu) credit though, for pulling it all together.

Reminds me about the story of Lennon's "Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite" from Sgt. Pepper. That song was inspired from a circus poster, and some of the lyrics in that song were on the poster.

It's interesting where ideas for songs come from.

I love the first two albums ("3:47 EST" and "Hope"). After that
they lost the plot PDQ, though they still had some good songs on
each album. But those two are gems of mid 70s progressive ambition
meets gorgeous pop craftsmanship.

Klaatu is a man like being played by Michael Rennie is the 1951 sci fi classic film "The Day the Earth Stood Still". Gort is his robot guardian who scared the wits out of me as a kid. Rent it and watch the b/w version, as colorizing isn't as satisfying. Get's back to the imagination requirement.
The Theramin is used extensively on the sound track and Bernard Herrmann scored it.
The movie inspired a band that took the character's name (Klaatu) and made some music in the 70's.

I don't know the "why" part as the film is far superior entertainment than their music, in my opinion.

colorized? yech.
[thank goodness ted turner shut down his colorizing factory years ago...]

it's one of the best film scores amongst herrmann's great scores.
i have the soundtrack cd at home someplace, probably next to the
soundtrack to "forbidden planet" [early synthesizer experimentalism].
the theremin adds just the right "otherworldly-ness" to the score.
...sort of the way a mellotron adds something when used just right.

it's brilliant!

As a matter of fact "Forbidden Planet" was the first film score using
electronic music exclusively. An interesting film for the aforementioned
fact, but not nearly as interesting (to me at least) as The Day the Earth
Stood Still. Forbidden Planet is more like a comedy with Leslie Neilson as
the straight man! How time changed his roles, IE the Naked Gun series,
Police Squad etc.

Bottom line to me is the birth of a new music genre well before Dr. Moog
graced us with his brilliance and resulting tools for producing intricate
compositions from bands like Tangerine Dream.

Yeah. But there isn't an ounce of theremin on it. It's
Bebe and Louis Barron using homemade circuits and
music conrete techniques with tape. There's plenty of
info (some of it from Bebe herself) on the internet
about it.

They had to call it 'electronic realizations" because
the union wouldn't have "music" played on machines
credited. The Barrons got blackballed in Hollywood
anyway.

OK...just checked the official Klaatu web site at

that made up 'Magentalane' feature Mellotron at all, which isn't
