Birotron dreams

2005-05-02 by Mattias

Sorry..but I can´t let this slip. Markus...Streetly boys ? Would it be possible to put Birotron sounds on a 400 tape frame ?
Find a good startpoint on the loop and go go go ? And what sounds are available...I found woodwinds mentioned somewhere...but what does it mean ?
Or are these sounds not be heard by human ears ?

It's a bit of a waste of time really. The early
Birotron sounds WERE Melltron sounds. Biro recorded
his own Pipe Organ (Wakeman at the controls) and his
own choir at the VERY end of their time. The loops
were made using to TEAC tape decks playing two
identical tape loops UPSIDE DOWN and 180 degrees out
of synch to avoid the loop point. Biro cross-faded
between the two machines to produce his eight track
masters. All of this is from Kean via the well worn
phone line. He interviewed Biro at length in
Jacksonville Fla in the early 90's. Facinating but SAD
story. Seems that Biro's fate was tied directly to
Wakeman's divorce...which left him momentarily
strapped for cash...which left Dave Biro out in the
cold. End of his glory years I guess.

Thanks Mark...!

Sad news indeed. I was hoping for a new source of crappy sounds...well well
guess I am stuck with my old ones...

BTW Does anyone around here have any of those weird eight track drum
machines that pop up now and then...Seems like a funkier cousin to the
Rhythmate...

Hi Mattias,

We have the Birotron loop masters here but they are a little sad. There are
some unique sounds including a string section, choir, church organ, flute
and brass. I think I've already edited up the choir as we may have all of the
original takes unlooped. They are recorded on 1" Ampex which likes to clog
the heads instantly but there are also some 1/4" loop masters. We could try
conjuring up a set if you were interested.

Best,

Martin

John has a brand new, in the box, never used Powerhouse Drum Machine
complete with all the tapes. It's for sale at the right price.
