Orford on trons

Orford on trons

2005-04-22 by Mockenrue

Martin Orford (IQ, Jadis) in a recent interview:

TIM: Did you ever own a Mellotron?

MO : I used to have a Mellotron, but I sold it to Clive Nolan many
years ago. I liked the sounds but I don't like the actual instrument at
all. It's a horrible keyboard and they go wrong all the time. I would
much rather access those sounds using modern technology that actually
works! The Sampletank Mellotron sounds sound a lot better to me than my
old Mellotron 400 anyway, and generally I was pretty disappointed with
the real Mellotron.

To put this in perspective, Martin's M400 was an unserviced bag'o'shite when
we had it in for restoration. Of course his opinion was going to be ever
thus just as anyone would malign anything that functioned that badly. Stick a
car in a garage for years and then try driving it as your main vehicle
without adjustment or attention of any kind. People like Martin piss me off
because their comments are based on their own lack of commitment to keep things
electromechanical maintained. Arse!

great analogy. [or is it "analoguey" in UK speak?]

when i bought my m400 it had actually been stuck in a garage for years,
and it "drove" quite badly. a little time and effort was all it took to
bring it back and "Drive" well again.

one positive thing about this type of neglect however:
it lets those of us that are in the know pick them up for a song when the
owner thinks it's just a piece of junk ;0)

Martin (Orford, that is) and I had some e-mail correspondence around the
time they released 'Dark Matter' last year. He said that his old machine
played fine when it was first renovated, but now plays horribly again. Maybe
Clive Nolan (who plays in two of the most godawful so-called 'prog' bands in
existence, BTW) isn't so hot on maintenance either. Martin did at least
confirm his real 'Tron/sample use for my IQ/Jadis reviews.

Some more interesting quotes from a progressiveworld.net interview
with Martin (Orford):

"I used to have a Mellotron, but as soon as the tapes deteriorated
it never really sounded any good. The SampleTank Mellotrons sound
like the brand new original must have sounded, and they are really
spot-on."

Same damn thing happened to my Gibson Les Paul. As soon as the
strings went bad, it sounded like crap. I wonder if SampleTank has
some good guitar samples?

This would all sound more convincing were it not for the fact that IQ
and Jadis sound like a bunch of cats' arses expelling the last vestiges
of a plate of tuna.

Sounds like I will have to sell my Fairlight as samples of it will sound
much better! :-)

Yes, but it was restored 8 years ago and has never been touched since. What
do these people expect? It's electromechanical and Martin's comments just
frustrate as does Clive Nolan's apathy.

Oh goody.

I'll be seeing Martin Oxford and the rest of IQ at NEARfest. We'll have at
least three live Mellotrons onstage (for Wobbler). We'll see which the
audience likes best.

No, Pendragon and Arena are awful. IQ are actually reasonably inventive, although I suppose we're back in Opinionland again. Opinions are indeed like arseholes, only a slightly different shape and colour. Identical smell, though.

p.s. Last time I visited Streetly, Martin grieviously insulted me by casually assuming I liked Maril... Mari... Mar... Oh, the band who used to have that Scotsman the size and shape of a brick shithouse on vocals. I may speak to the allegedly estimable Mr.Smith again one day.

FWIW, it irritated me, too. If you looked like Clive Nolan, you'd probably be apathetic, too. For those of you not in the know, he still wears a '1986-style' long coat, even in the bath. It fails to hide his vast girth.

Re: Orford on trons

2005-04-22 by Mockenrue

O.k. o.k.: Mellotron maintenance isn't his thing. But I think he
has written a fair amount of fine music. As always, musical
tastes may differ, sure.

>
> They are afwul
>

If you mean their music, o.k. Everybody's free to hold a opinion
on that. But as individuals, I think they are one of the easiest
musicians to deal with. Very 'down-to-earth' and accessible for
their audience.

BTW they have a new drummer: http://www.andyedwardsmusic.com/

As a result of this thread I went to the attick to find this old
(1993) interview I remembered. And I found it.

I was very surprised to see how passionate he seems to talk about
Mellotrons then.

"To me the Mellotron was irreplacable"

Q: "Do you also use it on stage ?"
A: "Always"

"The Mellotron is a cult instrument"

"Nothing has ever appeared on the market that sounded like a
Mellotron and as long as I can have it vaguely play the notes
I want I will always keep using it"

But also Tronbros' remark regarding lack of maintenance becomes
clear. The tron was bought for 250 Pounds. It has been re-painted
twice: first white, then black. The intense touring brought it in
a sorry state.

"After a while the interior looks afwul [...] On the bottom all
sorts of things are compiling: beer, dust, cigarettes, dead flies,
 tea bags, old socks etc."

"One day I decided to give it a good cleaning job. After removing
the bigger parts, I vacuumed the unit. While doing that I got a
phone call. While answering the phone I saw these three tapes
disappear in the vacuum cleaner. I took the tapes out of the
dustbag and ironed them flat again."

Some other interesting things:
------------------------------

"It's not a regular 1/4" tape but rather an oversized 3/8" tape.
Unique supplier was Fergold String Electronics. He used to have
his workshop in his garage. You could send him your old tape set
and he returned a new set for you"

"When we recorded 'The Last Human Gateway', the "D" tape
malfunctioned. When playing the intro I had to skip the "D".
After that we ran the recording tape at a different speed and I
 added the lacking notes."

"When we were recording 'Are You Sitting Comfortaly ?' with Terry
Brown, we lugged the beast into the studio and Terry fell off his
chair laughing, he couldn't believe his eyes. He looked at this
fridge of tapes and said: 'There is no fucking way this is going
 on the album' ".
