The Musical Box

2002-04-29 by Pishock, Jimmy

Good morning, all:

I saw the Musical Box in Philly just about 2 weeks ago and noticed that they
had, what looked like, a Mellotron 400 cabinet (white) on stage. However, I
doubt if the sounds were coming "from" it-- I believe there was some MIDI
keyboard packed nicely in there with Mellotron sounds being fed from some
sort of sampler or stored in it's memory. Other than then obvious sound
(which was pretty close) I kept my eyes (and ears) open for obvious signs.
The first give away was that the keyboardist never reached over to the side
to change sounds. The second, and most obvious give away, was that he used
4 sounds during the concert (3 Violins, 8 Voice Choir, Brass, and Flutes),
which, as we all know, the 400 can only pack 3.

The main reason Gabriel talked so much between songs was to allow
time to tune. (always a little choir or 3V's in the background as
Gabriel talked). The Musical Box guy talked alot but I didn't hear
any tron tuning... There's a clue for you!

As others may jump in to say... "not true". My 400 had a split voice (in
this case, male and female choirs either side of, umm... middle 'C'?) as
well as violins and flutes.

Then Martin got his hands on it.

Gordon.
