Recommendation: Fritz Doddy's CD

Recommendation: Fritz Doddy's CD

2005-02-11 by Bernie Kornowicz

Fritz, if you're listening, I just got your CD, The Feeling of Far
in the mail today and am listening to it as I write. Nice sounds and
great variety! Apparently your family and friends are pretty
talented folks, as well as yourself.

As a fan of traditional Chinese musical instruments, I especially
appreciated the erhu on The Lonely Path. I think some Chinese
instruments like the erhu, dizi, yangqin and guzheng would make nice
Tron sounds. Would you agree?

Best of luck with the CD!

Which reminds me. If anyone on this list wants to trade our recently
released CD "Soundtracks For Imaginary Movies" for yours, email me.
Let's start with Fritz and Sundae Club.

I'll second that. This CD has been stuck in my CD player and my head ever
since I got it two weeks ago. Plenty of tasty Mellotron parts throughout, very
well recorded too. There's much more than Mellotron here, this CD has it all
- interesting vocals (including family members, Ian LLoyd, and Chinese
people), thoughtful lyrics, a variety of instruments (some I've never heard of),
music that is well written and played. About what we'd expect from Fritz after
hearing some of his "Teaser" songs, portions of which were on the old Tronsounds
website. The new tunes on this CD are at least as strong as those, IMHO.

Last night I also discovered Fritz's new website, which is a blast. I knew
that there was a website in the works, and it appears to be up and running.
There's a very thorough review by Ken Leonard of "The Feeling of Far" on the
website. The link is www.fritzdoddy.com. See if you can spot the mullet ;-).

Thanks, Fritz.
(You too, KL, for the review).

Well, Fritz, it does look like you've been found out. :-)

A few of us have had the fortune of checking out "The Feeling of Far", and
I hope more of the folks out here take the time to check it out, too.

It's not really like the pop music of today: Fritz may look like Britney
Spears, but he doesn't sound anything like her unless nailed in the package
with a hammer. He's got more of a Beatles vibe, but not exactly. Rather
his own vibe. A very down-to-earth, personal album.

My thoughts are here:

http://www.kleonard.com/music/reviews/doddy.htm

Fritz has song snippets (and much more) on his in-progress-but-almost-done
web site. Yesterday there was a Fritz character poking around on the web
site, and if you clicked it enough times, something flew overhead and
pooped on him. Apparently it was appalled by the mullet. That character
is gone now, and so is the mullet. What's next?

I have to say that Fritz's album is a breath of fresh air. I love the music
but the production is a revelation in terms of clarity. No ringing stereo
reverbs muddying the image, no tedious pads disguising under-realised
arrangements, just boundless clear and concise ideas cemented together in the most
sonically wonderful CDs I've heard in a good long while.(can't read the next
bit Fritz as your writing's all over the place).

A gem.

Thanks for the kind words Martin. I've been told that this album would have appeal on your side of the pond, so I'm hoping some of your countrymen will take notice.
Update: I'm starting to get airplay here and am trying to work out a time to do an in-studio taped session for air.

Following up on this. I got my copy in Friday's mail. It's a great
piece of Beatles-Beach Boys-Moody Blues inspired pop. In some ways
not unlike Klaatu before they lost the script (but not quite as
overtly "prog"). In fact Klaatu hijacked by Brian Wilson might not be
too far from the mark. Certainly every bit as good IMO. It's a
fabulous CD and will certainly brighten your day when you hear it.

I bought mine online from CD Baby:

Thanks again Steven for the kind words for the tronists. The album is available at www.cdbaby.com/cd/fritzdoddy. Is CDbaby available to the UK? If not, let me know as I need to find a reputable outlet that is available and bullet-proof for the folks across the pond. I can be downloaded at iTunes as well, but you don't get the benefit of fairlt detailed production notes, lyrics etc..

I've had a copy for the past two weeks (straight from the Fritzmeister)
and it's in my daily rotation. I second Mssr. Davmor's assessment. Do
yourself a favor and pick up a copy. It's the best Fritz Doddy
recording ever!

I've had this CD for a couple of weeks myself. I thoroughly agree with
Steven. I hear early Klaatu as well... which is odd, because I spoke with Fritz
Sunday night, and upon mentioning this was informed that he had never heard
their work. A little ELO, perhaps?

All and all an outstanding accomplishment from Fritz.
