I think that Mattias is on to something.

Brain Wilson is:
*white
*weighs more than he should for what he does
*doesn't always work properly
*but with adjustment can and does
*has a very distinctive voice
*is responsible for some of the most iconic sounds in pop music
*worked with his two brothers
*was out of fashion for a long time but has recently made a comeback
*sounds really great live

I could go on, but I think I've already proven my thesis:

Brian Wilson is a mellotron!

So, you see, dear Martinge, you're wrong. There isn't life beyond
mellotrons.

Rick

PS Don't feel bad. Many of us think you're astounding...

He also mostly works in mono too!

GV uses the original Tony Asher lyrics. I like them both - the new
version includes some of the discarded music Brian was toying with for
ages. (I have a bootleg version of GV that goes on for about 15 minutes)

I miss Carl's voice on 'Surfs Up'. For all the damage he's done to
himself, it's amazing that Brian has any voice left at all. He can still
hit the odd falsetto, which is quite incredible.

Don't buy it and think of *tracks*. It's the sum of its parts.

I agree, Martin. I just bought my copy, some great stuff on there. As a
matter of fact, I'll be seeing Brian Wilson and band do the "Smile" album live
tomorrow night in Melbourne, Florida, which is just down the street from where I
live.

I have to celebrate, after safely making it through the horriffic hurricane
freak show that took place down here in Central Florida recently, which
included two mandatory evacuations for me. This "beach boy" is just glad that his
MKII didn't end up on the beach, after the one-two-three punch of hurricanes
Charley, Frances and Jeanne. Seems that the Merbler Triangle has followed me
south ;-). Hopefully, this concert will give me something to *Smile* about.

I just saw Brian Wilson do "Smile" live last night. It was one of the best
things I've ever seen / heard. I was on the 2nd row, and it was like they were
all in my living room. The harmonies were amazing, and I was close enough to
pick out some of the vocal parts, which was tough because they blended so
well. The guitar player was doing a lot of the falsetto parts.

I'd seen Brian before with the Beach Boys in 1976, and he seems to be at the
top of his game today, as far as performing. The musicians he's touring with
are top notch, very professional. He played a lot of old Beach Boys tunes,
but "Smile" was something special. They played the whole thing right through.
Having just purchased the CD, it was the perfect time for me to see this
show. Now I can't stop playing it. I did miss Carl's voice on "God Only Knows"
(which Brian introduced as Paul McCartney's favorite song), but it was still
great. I highly recommend this show to anyone who can see it. It was a very
positive experience. Brian even had us singing "Row, row, row your boat"! ;-).
Lots of humorous moments, too. Yes, there is life beyond 'Trons.
