Is there anyone out there?

Is there anyone out there?

2004-09-20 by tronbros@aol.com

Well..........

There is a new book in the planning that will attempt to clearly and
concisely define the impact of the Mellotron on music from the arrival of the MKI to
the present day. This book is being thoroughly researched and written, not
just compiled from available information and stolen web pages.

So which characters from the past 41 years would you like to see interviewed
to add depth and insight to the project? Remember, this is going to be THE
mellotron book and it has to cover all aspects. Answers on $50 bills please.

Best,

Doesn't matter to me. Just as long as Mark Vail isn't writing it.

I just can't bear another vintage instrument massacre....

How about Paul Humphreys and Andy Mc Cluskey from OMD, and the guys
from Wilco as well as Manfred Mann, Julian Lennon and that Crispian
geezer out of Kula Shaker who likes to pretend he's Indian?

Sundae Club will conduct interviews free of charge of course.

Oh.... Album out now btw

Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark!
And Julian Cope!
And those mentalists from Add N to (X) such as Barry 7

(who were about the only pop stars using mellotrons in the public eye in the
80s, 90s and noughties, respectively....)

As well as those already mentioned, a few other possibilities that
spring to mind would be:

Brian Eno

Manfred Mann

David Bowie

Robert Wyatt (the first Matching Mole album boasts some gorgeous, and
unusual, 'tron playing)

Ian McLagan

Paul Weller

Ron Mael

members of other Britpop/indie bands who have used them in the last
few years (e.g. Gomez, Radiohead, Stereolab, Air etc)

Simon House (ex of Hawkwind who used the 'tron on Hall of the
Mountain Grill / Warrior on the Edge of Time)....

It would be nice to include some not famous guys if there are any
to be found who played the MKII/M300 as it was meant to be
played ie in a pub/club or at home (ie someone who used the
rhythms and fills). Does anyone know of any pub/club musicians
who specialised in the mellotron? It would be nice to hear of
ordinary punters reactions on hearing a MkII in full flight in the
dance hall. I came across someone once but I'm not sure if I still
have his contact details. Surely there were "test-pilots" and
demonstrators at Mellotronics - but can any still be found?

Aside from the already-raised 'minority interest' issues brought up,
there is also the other problm of getting any of these people to speak
to you. I mean, why would they bother wanting to conduct an interview
about *one instrument* they (might have) played *once*, perhaps decades
ago? Wyatt (for instance) raves on about the Mellotron in the liner
notes to 'Matching Mole' but has never used one since.
