Dear All,

Thanks for the responses - all very interesting. Sometimes the deafening silence is hard to understand when this list is supposed to be populated by die hard afficionados.

In answer to Ken M: yes, frames aren't cheap but they are never going to be any cheaper as the production is VERY long winded and entirely done in house(at Streetly anyway). They are supplied fully assembled and there's no grappling with a kit of parts.

People with a classic car fetish will think nothing of upgrading, improving and throwing loads of money at something that will ultimately rot. Guitarists buy amps and effects and more amps and more effects and...etc etc. With a Tron it seems to me that an agenda of one frame a year or every other year would be something to strive for and they will last. OK, the tapes will need replacing years hence but the frame will out survive you and so will the machine.

The new sounds do add another dimension to the mellotron. All those who have tried the Bass Clarinet, Rick's French Horn, Ray's Fretless, the Russian Choir, the Cor Anglais/Oboe split and of course, Ian McD's Flute will know how HiFi a Tron can be and still sound like a Tron. And ultimately, for us to provide this service and offer long term preservation, we need to sell tapes and frames in addition to the servicing and renovation of machines.

Jon S's idea for a new standard tape set is fine. Why not M300A Violins/McD Flute/Russian Choir. The price for this set will be 95 pounds (normally 165 pounds sterling plus P+P)inc. Postage and Packing for March/April/May. If you order Flute/3 Violins/Cello at the same time, the price will be 95 for this additional set. There must be some tired standard sets out there.

Best,

Martin

Jon,

I can't do that, but how about I send you a set of the Systems theory demos
+ the tunes we've submitted for the "Son of Rime..." CD set?

Hi All.
This topic certainly has awakened those of us not used to public speaking. So
here goes.
Surely the point is whether the sounds, whether old or new, sound, well,
UNUSUAL!
Y'see if I want the sound of an orchestra, I'm better of with a sampler,
because, in theory, the digital platform won't add or distort the original.
It'll merely create a facsimile. The charm for me of the tron is that it does
add an unpredictability to the finished result. Question: Has the original
flute sound been used time after time because...
A) It sounds like a flute...(top D anyone!) OR
B) because it just sounds bloody great!
I rest my case m'lord!
Martin will be sniggering at this I know because he knows that my great
ambition is to spend time and re-tune my all time fav sound MK2 Brass! The
purists will probably say that its "out of tuneness" adds to it supreme
character, but in my opinion, bringing 3 or 4 notes to heel will improve the
overall usefulness of this classic sound.
I dont want faithful recreations of original sounds. I want original sounds!
I remember recording A Christian album back in the 70's. I turned up at the
studio, plugged in my pride and joy. The producer wouldn't use it much.
Preferring the sound of a Solina String machine!!! Needless to say we didn't
get on.
Best.

Theory - perhaps; practice - never. Digital sampling may remove some
form of idiosyncracies but it also introduces its own myriad artifacts
into the process.

Whether or not the purists scoff, I rather imagine that the Mk 2 Brass
is 'untuneable'. It consists of recordings of several instruments
playing the same note at the same time, and some of them appear to be
out of tune with each other. (The eight voice choir has the same
problems)

So do I - but I also want new sounds that allow me to explore scope and
potential of this absolutely extraordinary instrument.

But only once. When you play the note a second time the digital
platform produces exactly the same sound, a characteristic that is
nothing like a real orchestra.

Martin's right, of course - it's just difficult to justify the expense when you're on a shoestring budget!

Martin - how much extra for the frame itself? I can never remember.
