Just noticed that the "DK-restored" M400 with the pathetic little Austin Powers smile has been pulled due to an "error in the listing." Anybody know how high it went? I saw about $1300 a few days ago, the last time I looked.
2004-02-17 by John Hofmeyer
It was withdrawn. I had a bid at around $1675 - which was the winning bid when I checked, yeserday. The explanation for withdrawing the auction: "posted information was inaccurate". I am now on the hunt for a very inexpensive mellotron. Do they exist? Well... ...I checked Craigslist in a few urban areas (..haven't seen one advertised in the SF Bay area for the past year or so..) LA, Atlanta, Seattle, Vegas - no matches. New York, however - one was listed last week for $800! I sent an email to the contact person - he'd sold it pretty quick. Apparently it wasn't in the most aesthetic condition, I would care - as long as it was working! I think I'm just going to have to save a few grand in a 'tron fund... -jh --- jonesalley <jonesalley@...> wrote:

Take heart, John. There's another M400 on eBay now. Starting bid is $100. It also doesn't look like a piece of crap. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll? ViewItem&item=3705127063&category=29552 Bernie --- In Mellotronists@yahoogroups.com, John Hofmeyer <j_hofmeyer@y...> wrote:

Thanks for the heads-up! I just met the reserve... Seems that this list is a little faster at sending me notifications about Mellotron listings than EBay... This one does seem to be in good condition - I just hope that I can figure out how to get it to San Francisco if I win! -jh --- Bernard Kornowicz <kornowicz@...> wrote:

Good luck :) It might be worth emailing the owner to see if it has a muff cover or some other protection. Bernie --- In Mellotronists@yahoogroups.com, John Hofmeyer <j_hofmeyer@y...> wrote:

Hi all, I live only about an hour away from Salina, Kansas, so if anybody wants any checkup done or assistance with storing or schlepping the latest eBay offering, just holler. By the way, did everyone notice the assortment of knobs and switches, etc., that are also listed right now?

Yeah, the winning bidder of the ebay tron is going to need to pick up that volume knob that's for sale while they're at it. Looks like its missing. Perfect timing for a knob to show up on ebay, I must say. Jim #917

I have an idea that Pierre Veilleux has decided to clean out his closet (notice that the seller is in Montreal?). At one point he had about a dozen 400s in various states of repair and several were basically trash. He wisely kept everything salvageable and that included several sets of things like knobs and the like. I wonder... Rick PS Fritz, did you notice that I wrote THIS e-mail in Canadian? The giveaway is the way I pronounced "Montreal" and "about" when I was reading over the e-mail before sending it. Also, I was eating a beavertail, took off my running shoes as soon as I entered my house and used a serviette at dinner tonight, rather than a paper napkin, eh?

Yeah, I did notice the parts listed this weekend. Interestingly, I had just won an auction for a Hammond BV organ and a Leslie 122 in Sacramento (about 1 1/2 hour drive from my house). Although I had the winning bid, I did not meet the reserve. I sent an email to the seller, inquiring as to their plans with the organ (...not mentioning a price...) I KNEW that a mellotron would show up as soon as I won that damn Hammond. So - I've put the Hammond on the back burner and I'm watching this 'tron. The reserve hasn't been met, yet - I suspect the seller has based the price on previous 'tron sales. I just wish they'd start minimum bidding at the reserve price - then everyone knows where they stand. ...I get my next payment on Wednesday, which is when I'll re-visit the listing.... -jh --- "Brundage, Jim" <jpb@...> wrote:

Hi John, The listing says that the motor drags. It could be a CMC motor in need of replacing. Also, the original power supply is missing? What does that mean? 30 year old tapes, too. Might be a good idea to ask Martin what a motor replacement would cost. Maybe a new set of tapes, too, just in case. It definitely has a CMC-10 , which explains the pitch/stability issues. RE: the earlier post about the "earliest" M400 for sale (#170), Pierre Veilleux sold #123 to Jim Finnegan in VA's Tidewater area some years ago. The oldest M400 I personally have heard of is #104. No, it's not me, although it is the one that inspired my question about values. That is #1288, and I was offered it for $3500 which I thought was awfully steep considering it would need another $1000-$1500 to get it up to snuff, not counting shipping. It is in generally good cosmetic condition, but it has an unusual mod. There is a circuit board mounted on the keyboard assembly of which I have no idea about function. It will be interesting to see where the bidding goes on it. ----- Original Message -----

[cuz i can't see anything in the pics provided] and price-wise, it DOES include an additional tape rack. that's a couple hundred bucks right there, even if the tapes are trashed. i don't think $3500 is that steep, especially for one that SEEMS to be in very good shape [as this one does]. just IMHO of course. best to all, jeff

I saw it in person. It's the old motor card which I have never seen installed before. The instrument is clean, but it will need to have the upgrade, it will probably need to have the headblock azimuth worked on, and I was not told of a second tape frame. It may not be too much for an M400 in that shape, but it is only a little bit less than an M4000, and I'm planning on getting a 5000 when they finally come out, so I just couldn't justify paying top dollar for it under the circumstances. I'd have given 2K to 2.5K for it after I saw it, but any more is just buying retail. ----- Original Message -----

1500- 2k no matter what it looks like ? Well that wasn't true of mine or either of Jeff's or Jimmy Moore's.(a fair street/net sampling) I think that generalization may be for a specific metropolitan locale perhaps.like LA or London. You didn't really mean that,. gw

Hi all-
Location-specific? TECH-specific may be a better
classification (or wanna-be-tech, as the case may be).
The PRICE of an SMS board is really only part of the
issue. My unit (#1221) was modified with the SMS-3
motor controller, and has no Sound Sales badge. I
found a loose solder joint in the pwr supply, which
led me to check every joint in there. Found some
glaring solder errors, fixed them, and the machine is
much more stable. No idea who did the original SMS
mod, but they sure bodged it.
So, if your tech skills aren't great, it will cost
to have the SMS mod done right; shop time at the most,
steaks-on-the-grill (and fine ale) at the least. Add
a belt, azimuth alignment, headblock cable
replacement, bearings, supply capacitors, new springs
& turnbuckles, maybe a pinch roller or 3, and it can
add up to a lot.
Respectfully
-Bruce Daily
P.S. The craving for new tapes and refinishing will
creep up eventually...
