ASSISTANCE NEEDED!

ASSISTANCE NEEDED!

2004-01-23 by JS

All right, I need help. Andy, you or somebody here must be able to explain the (mis)spelling of "Salisbury" in "Solsbury Hill." What on earth is up with that? Seriously, I'm hip-deep in an argument over this, and I need INFORMATION!!!
Thanks y'all!

I think Solsbury Hill is a real hill in Gloucestershire or Somerset or
somewhere, nothing to do with the town of Salisbury. Not sure what
the significance is though.

It's just outside the large town/small city of Bath, near Bristol - I believe Gabriel's Real World studio is nearby. On the pronunciation front, the first syllable of 'Salisbury' rhymes with 'all', and that of 'Solsbury' rhymes with 'bowl'. The 'city lights' in the song are, of course, Bath. Speaking of which, if you live anywhere much south of Birmingham, the 'a' in 'Bath' is as in 'car', and if you're in Birmingham or further north, with 'cat'. Correct, Martin/John?

Correct, Martin/John?

And if you LIVE anywhere near Bath, the "a" is pronounced "aaaaaa" -a
bit like as in Saddam's Ba'ath.....
Probly.

Correct, Norm?!!

Dear All,

As I remember it "Solsbury Hill" is a hill that used to be near Bath until they put the A46 bypass through it!

Hence the different spelling...

All the best,
Norm
