Found this amusing quote from Keith Emerson... "I refuse to play a Mellotron on the grounds that it just doesn't agree with my principles. Because another violinist has had to come in to tape record it and what you're playing is a tape recording - I refuse to play a Mellotron under those situations. Greg (Lake) has a Mellotron--I don't mind him playing it."

And playing bad honky-tonk piano and tuneless 20-minutes 'epics' does? Because another violinist has had to come in to tape > record it and what you're playing is a tape recording - I refuse to play > a Mellotron under those situations. That's the most stupid reason I've ever heard for disliking them. Why not just admit that you don't like them because they won't let you show off outrageously? Greg (Lake) has a Mellotron--I don't > mind him playing it." Anyone know anything about this? I heard that he used it twice on stage for FX in 'Tarkus' before it caught fire (!). Andy T.

I understand Lake used a Mellotron on the Works tour when the orchestra became to expensive.

Hmmm... Let me get this straight, he refuses to play the Mellotron because it is (basically) an analog sample of another instrument(alist). So, does he have a problem playing the digital piano? C'mon Keith, play Nice. -jh --- Stan Cotey <Stan_Cotey@...> wrote:

The one reference I have directly read from an interview with Emerson was that Lake was suppose to help flesh out "Abbadon's Bolero" live with his 'tron but the Mellotron malfunctioned the first try live and so the song was scrapped from live sets. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Stan Cotey" <Stan_Cotey@...> To: "Mellotron List" <Mellotronists@yahoogroups.com> Sent: Tuesday, December 16, 2003 10:10 AM Subject: RE: [Mellotronists] Keith Emerson = Troniac? On a festive theme did Lake use tron for the choir on "I believe it's Father Xmas" or is that a real choir. I've not listened carfully enough. Yep, I saw Lake play the mellotron in 1974 in Zurich, and yes the opening song was Abbadon's Bolero with the tron, the sound was violins or strings (difficult to distinguish...) I send some time ago the recording I made with an ancestor of walkman (very poor quality) to Ken Merb just for the fun... Keith definately used one once with The Nice. "Diamond hard blue apples of the moon". It was the b side to something which I can't quite remember. Anyway, it is fantastic. Vangelis is another keyboardist who is anti the Mellotron.
