Does anyone know if Sir Rick ever sold his mellotron(s)?

If what he says is true, he actually set fire to them one bonfire night 5th
November.

Sir Rick sold his double mellotron and a surviving birotron. The other
mellotrons he burned (see translated excerpt of interview below):

RW: The Mellotron... I used to have two single Mellotrons, and a double
special Mellotron. And the two single ones I had, I was so frustrated,
because of tuning problems, and the tapes... And full of anger, I took the
two Mellotrons into a field, a put petrol over them, and I fired them.

YM: You really did that?. I can't believe it!.

RW: Yeah. And all of them, all the wood, burnt and all the metal just...

YM: Did you enjoy that?.

RW: At the time, at the time I enjoyed it, because they had ruined so many
sessions through going wrong and breaking, but afterwards I regret it. Oh,
of course I regret it!.

YM: And they were two 400 Mellotron, isn't it, the white ones?.

RW: Yes, so however how many 400 Mellotrons were built, I can tell you there
are two less

that too! :-)

ROTFL!

Too bad the Rickster didn't swear off playing the 'trons and set fire to all

Rick Wakeman

2002-11-12 by Takamiya Hirofumi

Hello.
Please let me know.
Is it true to say that it is not "Space Oddity" of David Bowie but "My Ship"
(It records on Battersea Power Station.) of JUNIOR'S EYES that Rick
Wakeman recorded first using Mellotron?

Good question. When I interviewed Rick for The Mellotron Book, he made
mention of becoming aware of the Mellotron during those sessions. He said,
"I first became aware of the Mellotron when I did a session for a band called
Junior's Eyes at Morgan Studios in North London. The studio had just opened
(1968) and what became the bar was then the studio. Tony Visconti was
producing and I was booked to play Hammond organ. In the corner of the
studio was one of the original double manual Mellotrons that had just been
delivered. Between takes, I played around with it and got to know its little
quirks."

There was no mention if that MkII was used by him on those sessions. Unless
you need to know right away to because of a bet, or you've bartered away the
rights to your firstborn, I will ask Rick about that when I see him on 12/2
and post the response afterward.

P.S. - You wouldn't want to exchange one of your MkII's for this vital
information by any chance, would you? Doesn't hurt to ask, does it?

Rick Wakeman

2007-05-19 by Berington Van Campen

All the best, indeed, to Rick Wakeman, for his birthday! First time I ever saw Mellotrons live were in Pittsburgh PA, when he toured with Yes after the "Fragile" album came out. Almost broke my jaw as it hit the floor... and that was just when a roadie came out and hit a couple notes to test one! Then Rick's performance, as well as the whole band, and subsequent ones - many of 'em with and without Yes, were ones I'll not forget, largely due to the "majesty" of those Mellotrons! And for one who displayed such true virtuosity & wizardry (in more than appearance!) on keyboards, it was great to see his wicked sense of humor as well. I'm sure I'm FAR from being alone in crediting Rick's serious influence on how MANY of us have played Mellotrons and ALL other keyboards since. HAPPY BIRTHDAY to the best of the best! Glad to see a new album out, too! Congratulations, and MANY happy returns to Rick Wakeman!

No, he's talking about Henry VIII's six wives. ; Chop off their heads, no more alimony! I don't think they allow this in the US, although I may be wrong. Since Johnny Cochran died, I don't think you can kill your ex-wives anymore. :^)
