Strawbs

2003-07-17 by Brundage, Jim

Hello to all-

This may sound unbelievable but, I don\u2019t own anything by the Strawbs and I realize that I am missing something here. Can any of you tell me which would be a good first album to get my hands on? Will I be the same afterwards?

Thanks- Jim

You want to acquire (on remastered CD):

with Blue Weaver on keys:
"Grave New World"
"Bursting At The Seams"

with John Hawken on keys:
"Hero & Heroine"
"Ghosts"

those are the core albums that the band's reputation rest upon. After
that you're on your own. I happen to like all their records, but the get
into a more pop direction after "Ghosts", and the tron factor decreases.
You might also check out the albums with Wakeman (before "Grave New
World"), though they're not quite as essential IMO:

"A Collection of antiques and curios"
"From The Witchwood"

Jim -

I believe you can sum up the Strawbs in one song.and it wasn't even on a
'Strawbs' album and has no 'tron - Dave Cousins' Blue Angel. A
Masterpiece!

But get Hero and Heroine to get a great start. Then From the Witchwood.
Then Grave New World. Then...

Vance.....Strawbs always in the CD changer

Strawbs

Anyone here thinking of going to see this version of the band which features
the Hero and Heroine/Ghosts line-up, featuring John Hawken, who's mellotron
playing had a profound influence on me in the early 70's. Should be good fun,
though don't know yet whether he'll be using the real deal. Details can be
found here _http://www.strawbpage.ndirect.co.uk/@f/f_0506mp.htm_
(http://www.strawbpage.ndirect.co.uk/@f/f_0506mp.htm)
I'll be going to The Half Moon gig on June 22nd.

Keen to do so - I can imagine the Half Moon will sell out pretty quickly, though, and I don't know if I can make it until nearer the time. :-( He won't use 'Tron, unless anyone can persuade him/supply one...

Strawbs

2006-10-17 by ceccles_ca

2007 electric tour planned with the 1973-1975 line-up.
Back in 2004, John Hawken used an M400 at NearFest. Did someone on
the list lend it to him?

It's called Tronophobia. A combination of Mechanophobia,
Kosmikophobia, Hodophobia, Taeniophobia and Metathesiophobia.

It isn't catchy, is it? That would be a real bummer.

Pretty much. He played it in Sellersville and at NEARfest. Not much, but
hey, some is better than none. Besides, it is on the cover the cover of the live
CD and it sounded awsome on Hero and Heroine.

Yes they did. There 3 M400's at that Nearfest. Frank Stickle bought 2 with him and I had brought Mine as a back up.
