Trons in New Age,Jazz,Classical

Trons in New Age,Jazz,Classical

Just to show that there are many other appearances of trons in genres
other than prog...in new age music for examples there are Richard
Burmer(tron,Chamberlin),early Kitaro,Gandalf,(are
T.Dream,Jarre,Synergy considered new age?) Jazz users include Herbie
Hancock(on the Crossings and Sextant albums),Jan Hammer(MK5),Return
To Forever(Gayle Moran used a 400 with her own voice on it).I wonder
about classical music(Tomita does classical with trons but is he
considered truely "classical" or electronic).I have seen European
conductor James Last mentioned as a tron user/owner but know nothing
of him.You might think that trons would be a cool addition to a full
orchestra to help with choral parts etc.

For "real" Mellotron and Chamberlin, you have to stick to the early Burmer
albums as he sampled his instruments and then sold them, including the last
Chamberlin that Mr. Chamberlin had made. I was too late to get the Chamberlin,
but I did get his last Mellotron. (-8

Richard really went through those 'trons! I got one of his also - I answered an ad in the Recycler back in the mid-80's and went to his house in Granada Hills CA. Very nice person, had a new baby. His arsenal included (I think I remember) a JX-10 and an E-II or E-III, plus a Chamberlin for $200 and an M400 for $200. I bought the M400, but passed on the M1. Please. *don't* rub it in....
His 'tron had a Buddhist Mandala on the front lower cover, which I thought was quaint but promptly removed (sorry Richard!). There's still a circle in the paint where it didn't fade. When we did ProgWest last year, Steve Roach was admiring the 'trons and I said that one of them used to be Richard's, and he got a big smile on his face and said that he had carted that very 'tron up many a staircase back when him and Richard used to play together! He looked at it and said "Where's the Mandala?" and I showed him the circle in the finish.

>Hi!My name is Pierre-Olivier-Turmel and it's the first time that
I write to your forum.Speaking of mellotron user in the jazz style,
Medesky,Martin and Wood used it quite a lot.I rented them my M400
#719 for their Montreal jazz festival performance last year.I know
that one of the recent messages had this band for subject. They used
mainly the 3 violins and flute sounds.Last year,Pierre Veilleux
(a close friend)got a call from the Montreal jazz festival to provide
them a machine for the MMW performance.Pierre didn't have a M400 with
standard tapes at that time.he only had custom 1/4" tapes in his
mellotrons and didn't have the time to convert one machine for the
show. Then,he called me to ask if I didn't mind to rent my mellotron
for that show. They used it more in the second half of the show, the
first was mainly a B-3 demonstration.After the intermission,the
music was more space and psychedelic and he used it a lot.We spoked
to John Medesky backstage and he said that he love the instrument
but his mellotron wasn't ready to take the road at that time. The
jazz festival recalled Pierre this year to ask him if we wanted
to renew the experience of last year but the band told that their
machine is in order right now and they hired a technician from
New-York who know well their machine.I don't think that John Medesky
known the reputation of Pierre(who is a well known figure in the
mellotron community).Pierre does a really good job of adjustement
before the concert with only 15 minutes of times left. The piano tuner
take his time and we still adjusting the machine when the crowd begin
to fill the place! We were rushed to do it quickly.Altrought that,
my mellotron behave well(never had problems, this machine is reliable
and was originally owned by Quebec prog band Morse Code-even with
a CMC-10).The performance was very good, specially in the second half
but I must admit it's not exactly my style. The concert hall was
mainly fill with americans from Vermont(not far from Montreal) dress
in bermudas and baseball hats(just kiddings!)

Have a nice evening!

                              Pierre-Olivier-Turmel(M400#719)
