Mellotron Emulator / Samples / Sound modules

Mellotron Emulator / Samples / Sound modules

2003-06-11 by Tim Clark

Hey all,

I'm sure this is going to cause the die-hards to cringe, but I'm
looking to get the most authentic mellotron tone I can get out of a
sound module. I figured I'd ask people who actually own a real
mellotron to find out what is close. Are there any software emulators
out there for the tron?

I've been looking at the Roland SRX expansion board (Ultimate Keys, a
combination of two JV boards called Keys of the 60s and 70s and
Vintage Synthesizers). It's the only one I've seen to advertise their
mellotron tones, so I'm hoping its good. Anyone heard it? I haven't
looked into any competitors, only Roland. Anyone else heard any good
mellotron patches in a sound module?

Thanks!
-Tim

I have the M-VS1, and I believe that it's basically a standalone
version of the Roland expansion boards (you can surf around on
the 'net to find out for sure).

I recorded an M400 vs. M-VS1 demo of sorts a while back. See:

...way down the bottom.

...kl...M400 #805 - is it live, or is it ...?

there's always the e-mu vintage keys. not bad with certain sounds,
albeit a limited selection of 'tron-specific patches.

Hi Tim,
For all those out there like me that don't have access to a sampler
but have a good pc and sound card; try GMedia's M-tron. You need
a VST 2.0 compliant host (eg Cubasis 4.0 for £40 or so and M-tron
for £50 approx and off you go!) I've never heard Pinders CD or any
others to compare it with but being able to compare real tron and
virtual tron side by side it sounds ok to me. I'd be interested to hear
opinions for others if anyone has it.

I also like the M-Tron VST plugin. I've A-B'ed it with my 2 M400's
and it's certainly good enough to fool most ears (although none on
this message board :>).

I've also tried Sampletank and a few others, but they don't sound as
good to me. Haven't played with the Pinder CD, but the recordings
I've heard with it sounded good.

Re: [Mellotronists] Mellotron Emulator / Samples / Sound modules

2003-06-11 by Jeff Coulter

the pinder cdrom is the best solution that i have heard.
just spent an entire day playing around with it and my ASR-10.
it's a bit harsh sounding on some sounds, but so is the real thing.
using a sample translator (such as [gag] chicken systms "translator") you
can move the sounds from/to different formats, or using the cdextract
utility you can perform some of the same sample gymnastics.

i found the original emu vintage keys to sound rather static and
unconvincing. the newer units may sound better, and that, of course, is
just my opinion [YMMV].

i know some people swear by the m-tron, but i think you need to have a
good deal of horsepower to run it alongside other software.

can m-tronm import other formats?
perhaps m-tron and the pinder cdrom would be the best possible substitute?

just an opinion or two...

Hi Tim;
I did own a mellotron at one time and am very familiar with its' sounds and nuances. I have tried several sample CD's that were uterly horrible simply beacuse only a handful of keys were sampled. The mellotron sound depends on each key and its' individuality of charactor. The very best mellotron sampled CD out still to date is the "Mike Pinder presents Mellotron". It is available at mellotron.com. Each and every note is sampled from the M400, MKII and the M300. You have to be able to load at least 16 meg. into a sampler he states on his web-site.

M-Tron has it's own format and can't import other formats. It's only
compatible with a VST client, which may require a fair amount of RAM
if you're also running other applications. I can get away with 256mb
on my PC running Cubase VST 5 and M-Tron alone, since M-Tron is only
a plugin.

Dear All,

My contenders for mock Mellotron are...

Classic Keys - flute samples are better than Vintage Keys, can be made quite good although the factory presets are a bit off the mark (infinite sustain - too clean) but has internal effects. Sold that to get a ...

Vintage Keys - more programmable so with some effort you can get a passable tron that is OK for live work or as part of a mix. Having real filters helps things greatly and allows you to come up with more "personal" sounds, good selection of other sounds as well but no internal effects. Bonus, if you get the Plus version then you will find Chamberlin in the second bank along with PPG Wave and Taurus pedals. Still have one of these...

Roland MVS1 Vintage Synth module - recently picked one of these up quite cheaply. Although editing is minimal the actual sounds are quite good and feel more polished in some ways than the Emu modules. However you have to remember to play notes within the range of the original. Sounds are less accurate but very usable - bonus is lots of Roland synth samples including various Roland drum machines. One to keep...

All the best,
Norm

I'm with Jeff, but finally mixing it in....

But until Martin and John go the 192 HD or such table and give it to us
to us the way it they and their informed circle know how ir should be (
or shouldn't be allowed to be). That will will be the one to get. it
could end up being a block of Rom a firewire tail and 3 knobs.

Mirage disk 1 sound one is nice cheap skeezaround (actually good cause
it wasn't second guessing, you have to edit out the loop)

Gentlemen, go get real Mellotrons and program your other instruments
until you realize that somebody is still fighting WW2 with Wavetables,
same wavetables ... Most of us have taken Physics and followed the
development of the synth and we know we've been sold a bill of goods
that got us to play Rhodes samples on everthing but a Rhodes and most
of you are still embarassed.

Real is real and all is vanity.

I know I should be using my very respected caucasian Psuedonym, my
friends are choosing me a new one currently.
