"Prog flavored mainstream pop"
I must admit, I'm surprised at the reaction that phrase has generated - perhaps I could best elucidate with a brief list of examples upon which I could easily expand, as I'm sure you all would as well:
Asia
Styx
Foreigner
Journey
Giuffria
Bad English
Queensryche
Boston
Electric Light Orchestra
U2
...and the list goes on.
Hope that clarifies.

I think the confusion's coming from definition - these are all , in one way or another, rock bands (especially Queensryche). 'Mainstream pop' makes me think of the lowest common denominator crud that's clogging up the charts, although there has, of course, been plenty of 'prog flavoured pop' over the decades:
Beatles
Beach Boys
Kinks
Zombies
any other decent psych-pop band
10cc
Coldplay
etc.
Y'know, even Black Sabbath referred to themselves as 'heavy pop' early on in their career! But then, they did spend many years permanently stoned...

Hi Jon,

No disrespect intended, oxymoron is just a fun word to say and I don't
get to use it that often! ;)
When I think of prog I think of 15 minute epics... when I think of
mainstream pop i think of cookie cutter talent and huge markets owned by
infinity broadcasting. The two genres just in general, in my mind, mix
like water and oil because long songs that are interesting to listen to
don't sit well with program directors who must play lots of commercials.
It's harder to "dumb down" your audience with music in 15/8 and that is
not all 120bpm. Oh, better not get me started. i DO see your point.

funny, one of my current bandmates used to be in a band that marketed
themselves as "progressive pop for the 90's!".

Personally, I think Asia and Journey fall under the sub-genre of "prog flavored mainstream crap". Styx is the kinda band that I'm almost embarrassed to like, much like Def leppard's "Pyromania". Then again, I think Glen Campbell's recording of Jimmy Webb's "Wichita Lineman" is in my top three best pop tunes of all time. Aaaand Begin......

Masters of Reality is still a very scary record to me! Great guitar sounds!

Actually, what I'd like to know about is the "hogvbr8r" - is that
like, foreplay for farmboys?

Hey, Mark.
Since you choose to single me out for my remark about the forlorn
appearance of that eBay M400, I'll keep this simple.

Blow me.

That Mellotron looks like ASS. Regardless of how it plays, it looks
like ASS. Look in the mirror, you'll see the resemblance.

TO THE LIST ADMINSITRATOR

Wow, I had no idea that some members of this list were so "low-brow"... As a
member of this list I certainly deserve more respect than this juvenile
diatribe indicates... Either remove the offenders or remove me.

this happens around here about once a year or so.
something about spring being around the corner... something
about being "in heat"... mating rituals... bodily fluids...

It does, pretty much.

That's right. I figure we're all adults.

The Streetly remark about DK doing bad work assumes that DK had
anything to do with the state of the machine, or if he did, that it
hadn't tumbled down a flight of stairs since. Neither is likely, so
this was an obvious unprofessional swipe at DK.

I think the swipe, as well as the ensuing arguments, will be viewed
negatively by most of the 235 members of this group as well as many of
the onlookers (the archives are open). So it probably wasn't the best
business decision.

No, I don't know what "snense" is, so don't ask.

Move to quarantaine

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
