I know what you mean!  I was tweaking a Keeney valve the other day and the main washer, the galvanized one ,not the rubber O-ring, has a franklin-type key on it. Needless to say, I struggled like hell to obtain the correct amount of torque before realizing the threads were reversed! Go figure.

'Tron rebuilds, Dickerson's undies, Hammonds,  all pale by comparison

That'll be Mike Dickwhittington, the inventor of the asbestos gusset.

..and the Fetzer valves; make sure they're properly packed with 30 weight
oil, gauze pads and your standard ball bearings.
