The Wirral, 1981

The Wirral, 1981

2003-03-11 by David Davis

Yes but it wasn't all capes and beards in 'tronland, ewe
know!

Yesterday, Virgin MultiMoneyGrabbingConglomerates plc
re-issued an re-mastered-with-loads-of-B-sides-tacked-on
version of 'ARCHITECTURE AND MORALITY' by Wirral's finest
neu!wave synthpop groop, Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark
(http://www.omd.uk.com )

Correct me if I'm wrong, but those fine Wirral lads were
just about the only people that managed to get their
Novatrons on Top of the Pops in the 1980s, weren't they?
with pleasing top 10 hit singles all about Joan of Arc
being burnt at the stake?

This re-issue CD is great cos it has bonus tracks such
as 'Navigation', where Paul Humphreys plays the String
Section sound whilst his dog barks down a cardboard tube,
and 'The Romance of the Telescope' where Andy McCluskey
smear big gobs of really slow mellotron brass over
everything and Atomic Kitten had never even been born yet.
And that's only the half of it.

I wonder where the OMD Novatrons are now?

Blimey!!

Still a porker then is he?!!

They had two as far as I remember, a Novatron and a Mellotron. They
declined a "generous" offer from me for them when 'Trons were in their
"Junk" (Culture??) period. Haven't noticed any on Atomic Shitten stuff
lately, but then again I haven't been listening too hard.......
