the (almost) complete list

What a list you've got there Andy. I noticed a Beatles record missing.
"Abbey Road" has a lot of mellotron lurking in the background, doesn't it?.

P.S. This email has bounced twice from the mail server. I wonder what's wrong?

Hi Frank

What a list you've got there Andy.

Er, yeah... just a bit! Funnily enough, I do manage to have a (sort of) life
as well. :-)

Well, as with 'Sgt.Pepper', it's rather hard to say. I've had mails from
loads of people saying they can hear 'Tron on this or that Beatles track,
and chances are, you're all correct! Bit of a bugger to hear in the mix,
unfortunately. Since Beatles stuff is easy to find on file-sharing programs,
I'll listen to anything that anyone recommends - the aforementioned Pepper
is my next 'is it or isn't it?' listen.

Ah yes, Pepper - even now I still struggle with working out whether or not any 'tron is on there - the only possible candidates I could think of would be the audience sounds on the title track and reprise (though I've heard somewhere that George Martin actually got those from recordings of 'Beyond The Fringe' a few years previously - anyone else know for certain about that?), and *maybe* the following tracks:

the animal sound effects on 'Good Morning Good Morning'? - MKII flute buried somewhere on the tooty parts of 'Being For The Benefit of Mr Kite'? and another one, the main one I still can't work out - on the piano solo in 'Lovely Rita' - it sounds like either the piano is heavily reverbed elsewhere in the mix, or just maybe, could be very heavily reverbed MKII violins playing (more or less) the same melody as the piano - it has a bit of 'that sound' about it (more so on my mono copy anyway). Again though, all guesses - anyone else shed any light on those?

I had just sent Andy an e-mail to his website last week with the same observations:

definitely Mk II flute in "Mr. Kite" - plays the opening line melody and turnaroundline over the Gm A Dmfigure. The instrumentation there is Mk II flute, bass, sounds like harmonium, and accordian (tron or real, anyone)?I hear the Mk II strings in "Lovely Rita"doubles the piano in the break at 1:12 to 1:22. Very reverbed. Is there any Mk II brass or mixed, or sax in "Good Morning, Good Morning"?

Isn't there some tron strings blended into the backing of "Something"?
It sounds like a blend of strings and real horns. I could be wrong, though,
because it's so hard to hear for sure.

Hi Brian/all

I had just sent Andy an e-mail to his website last week with the same observations:

Sorry I hadn't replied to your mail - had to download a copy of the album (don't own anything by 'em), and haven't got round to playing it yet!

definitely Mk II flute in "Mr. Kite" - plays the opening line melody and turnaround line over the Gm A Dm figure. The instrumentation there is Mk II flute, bass, sounds like harmonium, and accordian (tron or real, anyone)? I hear the Mk II strings in "Lovely Rita" doubles the piano in the break at 1:12 to 1:22. Very reverbed. Is there any Mk II brass or mixed, or sax in "Good Morning, Good Morning"?

Well, it has to be said, a whole can of worms has been opened here! That Beatles Sessions book (Mark Lewisohn?) only lists the 'Magical Mystery Tour' and 'White Album' stuff, but it seems you're all hearing it all over the shop. Since I constantly strive to keep my reviews accurate, I'm going to try to listen to as many of these as poss, but it's an almost impossible task, especially when it's so often buried in the mix. Shame nobody here's got a direct line through to Macca... :-)

As far as the Stones' 'Satanic Majesties' is concerned, I can hear it on six of the album's ten tracks, but I'm notoriously bad at spotting the less-obvious Mark II sounds. Apart from the obvious 3 violins/flutes/mixed brass, there may well be saxes, and possibly even sound FX. Anyone?
