Strawbs/Gentle Giant (Nomadness/FreeHand tour)

Strawbs/Gentle Giant (Nomadness/FreeHand tour)

2003-02-13 by mellotrongirl <mellotrongirl@hotmail.com>

For awhile after Hawken left, the Strawbs apparently toured with two
journeymen keyboard players--I recall seeing the Strawbs with Gentle
Giant in Seattle's Moore Theater & that's the way it looked...it was
too funny. Cousins would say what song the band was about to play,
and have to wait for the two keyboard players to find the right page
in the set list music books, and they would both look up to Cousins
when they were on the right page. And Cousins blathered and swaggered
the whole time...looking like he was going to topple off the stage
into the front row. In the post Wakeman/Weaver/Hawken days, the
Strawbs never really had a set-in-stone official keyboard player, did
they? And by the way, Gentle Giant were GREAT!

One of them (from the Deep Cuts album) was Rupert Holmes -- the Pina Colada
Song guy.......sheeeesh.

Vance......I'd prefer the Newcastle Brown Ale Song myself......

I thought they were Robert Kirby and John Mealing, from 'Deep Cuts' through
to 'Deadlines'.

It was Kirby and Mealing. Once they settled in they did a fine job. I
believe the tour in question was for "Nomadness", an album recorded with
no permanent keysman. With "Deep Cuts" they were on board full-time.

I stand (partially) corrected...Holmes was the 'third' of a trio of keyboardists
on Deep Cuts. Kirby and Mealing were the tour and subsequent album duo.
