Stout walking boots - waterproof with good ankle support
Good clear maps of North America
A lightweight waterproof tent
Comfortable backpack
Thermal garments
High tog sleeping bag
Torch
Flask
Small stove
Matches
Can opener
Swiss army knife

Head south.............
